Belgium, euthanasia for 11-year-old with cystic fibrosis. “Free” choice?

According to the law, the patient's death must be foreseeable within a short time. But for cystic fibrosis we talk about "average life expectancy around 40 years", without considering medical advances
Of Leone Grotti

Three minors were killed in Belgium with euthanasia. The law that extends the "good death" also to minors is entry into force il 2 March 2014 and if it is not received in the first two years (at least officially) no request, between 2016 and the 2017 three children received the lethal injection 9, 11 e 17 years.

THE PATHOLOGIES. The Federal Commission for the Evaluation and Control of Euthanasia did not provide medical details of individual cases. It is only known that the 17-year-old suffered from Duchenne muscular dystrophy, the nine-year-old was suffering from a brain tumor, while that of 11 he had cystic fibrosis.

WHAT THE LAW SAYS. The law does not provide an age limit for requesting euthanasia. A child can achieve the “good death” when: is in a state of physical or mental suffering subjectively judged to be constant and unbearable, is in a condition where death is foreseeable within a short time, is able to discern and a psychologist or psychiatrist ascertains that "what he expresses is what he understands". The request must also be free and unconditional and obtain the consent of both parents.
FREE CHOICE? Faced with these criteria, and not knowing the specific cases because the commission did not want to release the details, questions can be asked especially regarding the child suffering from cystic fibrosis. It is believable that just 11 years he freely made the choice to die, without being influenced by third parties, fully understanding what this choice entailed? It is believable that, if it has been done, the child understood what therapeutic paths he could take to avoid euthanasia?
CYSTIC FIBROSIS. Furthermore, one may also ask whether the law has been respected where it provides that death is foreseeable within a short time. According to the Italian Cystic Fibrosis League, they occur in our country 200 new cases per year. Almost today 6.000 children, adolescents and adults affected by the pathology are treated in specialized centers. According to the Cystic Fibrosis Research Foundation, «Today there are more adults than children with cystic fibrosis. Statistics suggest a median life expectancy of around 40 years: these forecasts are continually improving thanks to research progress". In the United States the average life expectancy with this disease is 43 years. Furthermore, explains the Italian League, «Therapies have had notable developments in recent years. Indeed, alongside a therapy for the symptoms, we are now starting to have personalized therapies that treat the underlying defect in some forms and it is hoped that, within a few years, all genetic mutations will be curable".
«NORMALIZED EUTHANASIA». The cases vary greatly from each other, but in the absence of clinical details it is still legitimate to ask whether euthanasia was the only option for this child. In Belgium the "good death" is an increasingly common and accepted choice: if in 2004 they received the lethal injection 349 people, In the 2017 ben 2.309. As noted by a Belgian expert working at the Center for Biomedical Ethics, Chris Gastmans, «euthanasia afterwards 15 years is now something normal, it is considered a new way of dying. People in Belgium now consider euthanasia a right and believe it is a normal and good way to die.".

HOLY LAND – Palestine, the Christian religion becomes one of the subjects for school graduation
The decision reached afterwards 13 years of debates. A ministerial text approved. In Bethlehem, the kids are thrilled. Previously the test was only internal, not recognized at state level
Bethlehem (AsiaNews) – At the next high school exams, Christian and Muslim students will face a test side by side, each on their own religion. For the first time, the Christian religion is in the official subjects of the "tawjihi", the final exam for high school students (12but class). Brother Marwan Di'Des tells it, Franciscan and director of the School of the Holy Land in Bethlehem. In the Palestinian Territories the school year started on 29 August (to the joy of the little ones and the regret of the high school students, Brother Di'Des comments laughing). For the 2018-19, final year Christian students will take an additional subject in the national exam: “Christian education”. The decision is the result of 13 years of debate and work. For the test, the Palestinian Ministry of Education has approved a textbook drawn up with the collaboration of all the churches (“churches”, ndr) in Palestine. In previous years, the exam concerned only Islam, although both religions are obligatory. “The issue is one of social justice: if the Muslim boy can take an official exam, why not the Christian?”, comments between Di'Des. “It is a great result because in the Holy Land we are less than 2%. This absolute minority that manages to have a state exam for their religion is an important success. It is also a sign that the Authority recognizes our pedagogical role." (…) Equality between Muslim and Christian children is a lively issue for the Bethlehem school, where the 67% of the students are Christian and the rest are Muslim. (…)

Libya-Syria: who they support, who to cheer for

Of Fulvio Grimaldi
Amici, this time too we are long. Pardon. However for 15 days I'm out and, so, there is time to slowly make it. If you believe.

Let's face it: What good rulers are those of Al Qaeda and Isis!
For those cheering in Syria those there (don't let me mention them otherwise Facebook will ban me and delete the post) it's not difficult to know: just read the "New York Times”, golden standard of journalism perennially worthy of recognition, if not Pulitzer, di Reporters Without Borders (the media counterpart of Medicins Sans Frontières and equally dear to those there). If we thought that they were concentrated in the northwestern province of Idlib, welcomed, fed and armed by the old Turkish godfathers, all the ISIS and Al Qaeda cutthroats generously evacuated from the territories and cities they embellished with crosses weighed down by infidels, or with skins from the flayed bodies of dissidents, reading the "New York Times" frees us from the intoxication of similar fake news.
The authoritative newspaper that, if it hadn't been for the CNN assist, of the media of Atlanticist obedience with, in our small way, the "manifesto", he would have freed us from Milosevic with his pens alone, Saddam, Gaddafi, Assad is the Taliban, rectifies what has so far and for too long, almost eight years, it was false information, liar, fraudulent. Assad, with those hackers and trolls of Russian urbi et orbi interference, with those spirited flagellating Scythians, Iranians and Hezbollah, he wanted us to believe, with the support of kilometers of manufactured audiovisual materials, depicting vigilantes who skinned innocent people alive, they set them on fire, they either drowned them in cages or crucified them, or they married the women by the hour, that his country had been invaded, not by democratic opponents assisted by the "international community", but rather by a pack of Islamist maniacs activated by an "international community" in the throes of mass murderer psychopathy. As he claimed had happened in Libya and, then again, in Iraq.
No, no, the NYT and our local Pulitzers reward us with the privilege of the truth: Destiny is terrifying."of rebel fighters and their civilian supporters who, over seven years ago, they rose up to demand a regime change". It is deplored that the Syrian deputy prime minister allowed himself to define these good fighters as "terrorists"., the newspaper, to whom we owe much of the credibility of Saddam's weapons of mass destruction and the viagra supplied by Gaddafi to his soldiers to rape his fellow countrymen, he goes on to describe how the unjustly maligned rebels governed the province entrusted to them by the Turks well: “They behaved as legitimate government and public administration authorities, facilitating, among other things, cross-border trade with Turkey and organizing aid supplies to the population”. Seeing how good they are, they worry about feeding the population. Other than Assad, which in principle starves him.

Nigeria: a country devastated by its "wealth"

Of Except Ardizzone
Nigeria: a country devastated by its "wealth"
Source: The Lighthouse on the World
The Nigeria it is a country larger than France and Germany combined, with above 170 millions of inhabitants who lead a miserable life (54% of the population below the poverty line) despite being above a sea of petrolium (extraction, although slowed down by many problems, it is approximately two ml of barrels per day) and say gas; and said incidentally, this is where 80% of tax revenues come from and the 95% of exports, because the rest is the desert. The GDP, which is the second largest in Africa, it is divided in the most unequal way not only among the people (the rich are there, yes!), but also between regions (which are called states there) and region and between ethnicity and ethnicity. And there are many ethnic groups in this state (circa 250!) cut, like many in Africa, based on the whims of the colonialists (they were English there); the most important are five: Comment (21% of the population), Igbo (18%), and Ijaw (10%) who are in the south; Hausa Fulani (20%) it's Kanuri (4%) who are in the north. Because extremists are strong in the Swedish paradise? Because it's not a paradise

Of Rodolfo Casadei
Because extremists are strong in the Swedish paradise? Because it's not a paradise
Source: Times
It is the industrialized country that has recovered best from the consequences of the global financial crisis 2008, the second best in the entire European Union for unemployment rate (5,9 percent) and the first for employment rate (82 percent of the workforce); its GDP is growing at the rate of 3 percent per year thanks also to investments in development and research, the highest in all of Europe (3,3 percent of GDP) and is positioned first in the world rankings of sustainable development, entrepreneurial opportunities and economic competitiveness. Yet in the elections scheduled for Sunday 9 September its main governing party risks recording its worst result of the last few 100 years, while the two opposition parties of the far left and especially the far right are credited with the best result in their young history.

How is this possible? It is possible if you are in Sweden, and if the best socio-economic data in the world or in Europe are accompanied by disturbing statistics like those that have recently hit the headlines: in a country of 10 million inhabitants where up to 10 years ago shootings were almost unheard of, some have been well recorded 320 last year, together with 110 murders and 7.226 reported rapes, il 10 percent more than 2016. Il 36 percent of women say they feel in danger at nightfall, and the police reports prove them right: Reports of sexual violence tripled between 2012 and the 2016, thus affecting the 4,1 percent of all women, against 1.4 percent six years ago. If even the left realizes it: “The people turn against the elites”

Of Matteo Carnieletto
If even the left realizes it: “The people turn against the elites”
Source: The eyes of war
It is easy to say that populism is absolute evil. A sort of fascism of the new millennium to be eradicated. Right, in today's populist movements there are hints of extremism, sometimes even racism. But you cannot understand how these movements are succeeding around the world without understanding their causes. The deepest ones and those that have created discontent among the people who then go to the polls and decide who to reward (to punish).
In an interview with Il Manifesto, the well-known activist Noam Chomsky had his say, sparing no one, especially the American left: “In the USA many workers voted for Obama, believing in its message of hope and change, and when they were quickly disillusioned, they looked for something else. This is fertile ground for demagogues like Trump, what an end to being the voice of workers while undermining them time after time through his administration's anti-union policies, who represents the wildest wing of the Republican Party”. Here Chomsky is right about the first part, but wrong on the second, given that under Trump the lowest unemployment rate has been recorded since 2000. Read More

The future of Sovereignty

Of Roberto Siconolfi
The future of Sovereignty
Source: Heretically
The entire political-ideological movement linked to the sovereignist/populist alignment moves in a context and in a series of precise directions. Continuing along this path new questions arise, on crucial choices which can be responded to either with the dry alternative or with the affirmation of a plural ideological-political wave which despite having a very distinct central axis, contains “different” if not even “contrasting” options. As for the context, starting from the most obvious aspect, we must take note of the definitive drying up of the left political area but more precisely of Marxism. The death of Domenico Losurdo embodies a symbolic end of all "intellectually honest" Marxism with which it is still worth dealing and with which one can also find points of convergence for very concrete political battles. The same can be said for certain political subjectivities, representatives of that area. However, we must realize that Marxism is completely finished, and not for reasons of who knows what historical significance. It has reached its lowest point, the “0” of its descending parable. L'oracolo del nulla

Of Paolo Sensini
The oracle of nothingness
Source: Paolo Sensini
From the heights of his boastful knowledge he devastated everything that came into his hands: philosophy, reduced to quotations and a collection of incomprehensible abstruseries; Venezia, of which he was mayor for 3 mandates lasted well 17 years (1993-2010) where it collected disaster after disaster transforming it from a city in decline to a dead city, stripped by rapacious and destructive tourism; the Daisy, understood as the political party headed by Francesco Rutelli where the philosopher lagoon was responsible for the training of management executives and which then dissolved into thin air… But all the regime media welcome him in their broadcasts as if he were the oracle of Delphi. Now the doge of all-rounders who has lived his life at the expense of taxpayers has made his decision, together with his other academic baron peers, to revive the political fortunes of Europe with the foundation of a transnational grouping that puts things right. The program? Here's a little taste: «Descend from the acropolis, rebuild a presence in the plain. The meaning of our appeal is to tell everyone: get organized […]. The forces that share this project come together, transnationally: Macron in France, Citizens in Spain, Tsipras in Greece, which was very good. A project called New Europe: a new government, breaking with the old interpretation of Europe and in contrast with the sovereignists […]. The root of identity should not be sought in the past, the root can only be identified in the future". In practice, the star philosopher proposes dissolving the PD to create a political force to revive the fortunes of a left in free fall. Because him, in terms of “roots”, he knows a lot about it. Here are the tones with which this freebooter painted his fellow citizens while he was mayor of Venice: «The so-called civil society invades your office every day because it has a prostitute in the avenue, or the casino in the bar downstairs, or the beggar or the rough road […]. An army of infants incapable of making do… And I replied: All right, I'll give you the order, so stop breaking my balls". What can I say: there could not have been a better viaticum for the definitive sinking of the left. Read More
