Open letter from the Syrian Nuns: Calling things by their name, è questo l'inizio della pace

Open letter from the Syrian Nuns: Calling things by their name, this is the beginning of peace

When the weapons fall silent ? And when will so much biased journalism be silent ?
We who live in Syria, we are really tired, nauseated by this general indignation that is raised to condemn those who defend their lives and their land.
We have gone to Damascus several times in recent months; we went after rebel bombs had caused a massacre in a school, we were there a few days ago too, the day after they fell, launched from Goutha, 90 missiles on the government side of the city. We listened to the children's stories , the fear of leaving home and going to school, the terror of having to see their classmates get blown up again, or jump themselves, children who cannot sleep at night, for fear that a missile will land on their roof. Fear, tears, blood, death. These children are also not worthy of our attention?
Because public opinion didn't bat an eyelid, because no one was outraged, because no humanitarian or other appeals were launched for these innocent people? And why only and only when the Syrian government intervenes, arousing gratitude in Syrian citizens who feel protected from such horror (as we have seen and are told), we are outraged by the ferocity of the war?
Right, even when the Syrian army bombs there are women, children, civilians, injured or dead. And we pray for them too. Not just civilians: we also pray for the jihadists, because every man who chooses evil is a lost son, it is a mystery hidden in the heart of God. And it is to God that judgment must be left, He who does not want the death of the sinner, but may he convert and live.
But that doesn't mean you shouldn't call things by their name. And you can't confuse those who attack with those who defend themselves.
To Damascus, It is from the Goutha area that the attacks against civilians who live in the part controlled by the government began, and not vice versa. The same Goutha where – it must be remembered ? – civilians who did not support the jihadists were put in iron cages: men, donne, exposed outdoors and used as human shields. Goutha: the neighborhood where today civilians who want to escape, and take refuge in the government part, taking advantage of the truce granted, they are targeted by rebel snipers...
Why this blindness of the West? How is it possible that those who inform, also in the ecclesial sphere, be so one-sided?
War is bad, oh yes, yes if it's ugly! Don't come and tell the Syrians, who have seen it brought home for seven years... But one cannot be scandalized by the brutality of the war and remain silent about those who wanted the war and still want it today, on the Governments that have poured their increasingly powerful weapons into Syria in recent years, their intelligence… not to mention the mercenaries deliberately allowed to enter Syria by passing them through neighboring countries (many who later became ISIS, the West must be reminded, that at least this acronym knows what it means). Keep silent about the governments that have gained and continue to gain from this war. Just look at what happened to the most important Syrian oil wells. But this is just a detail, there is much more important at stake.
War is bad. But we haven't reached the goal yet, where the wolf and the lamb will dwell together, and for those who are believers it is necessary to remember that the Church does not condemn self-defense; and even if we certainly don't hope for the use of weapons and war, faith does not condemn those who defend their homeland, your own family, not even your own life. You can choose non-violence, until he dies. But it's a personal choice, which can only put the life of those who choose it at stake, you certainly can't ask that of an entire nation, to an entire people.
No man who has a minimum of true humanity, can wish for war. But today tell Syria, to the Syrian government, not to defend his nation is against all justice : too often it is just a way to facilitate the task of those who want to plunder the country, massacre his people, as has happened in these long years in which the truces have served above all to rearm the rebels, and humanitarian corridors to bring in new weapons and new mercenaries.. and how can we forget what atrocities have happened in recent years in the areas controlled by the jihadists? violence, summary executions, rapes... the stories given by those who finally managed to escape ?
In recent weeks they have made us read a truly incredible article: so many words to convey a single thesis, and that is that all the Eastern Churches are only servants of power... for convenience... Some nice catch phrases, like the reverence of Bishops and Christians towards the Syrian Satrap... a way to delegitimize any appeal from the Syrian Church that gives a glimpse of the other side of the coin, the one we don't talk about.
Beyond any useless defense and controversy, let's make a simple reasoning, starting from a consideration. And that is that Christ – who knows the heart of man well, that is, he knows that good and evil coexist in each of us, he wants his people to be leaven in the dough, that is, that presence that little by little, from the inside, it makes a situation grow and directs it towards truth and good. He supports her where she needs to be supported, he changes it where it needs to be changed. With courage, without duplicity, but from the inside. Jesus did not indulge the sons of thunder, who called for punitive fire .
Of course there is corruption in Syrian politics (as in all countries of the world) and there is sin in the Church (as in all Churches, as the Pope has complained many times)
Ma, appealing to everyone's common sense, even non-believers : what is the real alternative that the West is calling for for Syria? The Islamic State, sharia? This in the name of the freedom and democracy of the Syrian people? But don't make us laugh, On the contrary, don't make us cry...
But if you think that in any case it is never permissible to compromise, then for consistency we remind you, just to give a small example, that you couldn't get petrol 'without compromising with the strong powers', as most companies bought cheap oil from ISIS, across the Turkey Bridge: so when you travel a few kilometers by car, you also do it thanks to the death of someone from whom this oil was stolen, consuming the diesel that was supposed to heat the house of some child in Syria..
If you really want to bring democracy to the world, secure your freedom from the satrapies of the West, and worry about your consistency, before intervening on that of others..
Not least, one cannot help but say that the fact that if a Christian or a Muslim denounces the atrocities of jihadist groups should be passed over in silence, finds only a rare media echo, for marginal streams, while those who criticize the Syrian government gain the front pages of the mainstream media.. Perhaps someone remembers the interview or an intervention by a Syrian Bishop in some important Western newspaper? You can disagree, evidently, but true information presupposes different points of view.
After all, those who speak of an interested reverence of the Syrian Church towards President Assad as a defense of the short-sighted interests of Christians, proves that he does not know Syria, because in this land Christians and Muslims live together. It was only this war that damaged coexistence in many parts, but in the areas secured by the army ( unlike those controlled by the 'others') we still live together. With deep wounds to mend, Unfortunately today I also have a lot of difficulty in forgiving, but still together. And good is good for everyone: the many charitable works bear witness to this, rescue, development managed by Christians and Muslims together.
Right, Whoever lives here knows this, despite so many contradictions, not someone who writes from behind a desk, with many stereotypes of opposition between Christians and Muslims.
Free us Lord from war... and free us from the bad press...".
With all due respect to journalists who really try to understand situations, and truly inform us. But they certainly won't be the ones who feel bad about what we write...

M5S, Cafés flooded with phone calls: "Dove sono moduli per il reddito di cittadinanza?'

In Giovinazzo, Municipality in the province of Bari, the Caf assailed by phone calls from the unemployed: “Give us the form to request citizenship income”
Of Claudio Cartaldo
Not surprising, or maybe yes. But in Southern Italy, there where the Five Star Movement he collected almost all the constituencies available in the last political elections, il citizen's income that seems to be the promise it has warmed the hearts of voters.
To prove it there would be a story that is causing quite a bit of discussion.
Calls for citizenship income
The story comes from Giovinazzo, small municipality in Puglia. In the Molfetta college (where Giovinazzo was located) Francesca Galizia, grillina candidate, got the 43% and in the municipality the votes were just under 40%. A win across the board. Bene. As explained today Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno, in this citadel of 20 thousand inhabitants on the outskirts of Bari, but, the Cafs and the patronages were attacked with the request to be able to fill out the forms to obtain the citizenship income. “They won there Five Stars – the Caf employees were heard to say – now give us the forms”.
At first the operators thought it was a joke. But then the high number of phone calls made it clear that many had believed the promises had already been implemented grilled. Faced with the obvious answer that a similar module does not yet exist (and who knows if it will ever exist), many citizens turned to the municipal offices for confirmation. Read More

In Italy everything is bad? Everyone queuing for the Big Brother selections

IF AND’ IT'S TRUE THAT THINGS ARE BAD IN ITALY AND THE YOUNG PEOPLE (AND LESS YOUNG) I AM WHAT I AM, IT WOULD BE APPROPRIATE TO INQUIRE ABOUT THE MOTIVATIONS. IN THE MEANWHILE LET'S FIND THIS FACT, NOT OF LITTLE IMPORTANCE (N.D.R.):
Among the three hundred candidates there are those who even lined up at dawn
Quasi 300 people besieged the Court of Games, on the first floor of the 8gallery, this afternoon, Sunday 25 February. All for the selections and castings to participate in Big Brother, started at 15. Among those present, some even queued at dawn, to ensure the safety of being in the 200 potential "gieffini". And precisely because of the high number of participants, the organizers had to close bookings shortly after the selections began. Trying your luck, come on people 18 until 60 years, all looking for the ramp to fame, as well as those who decided to participate for fun: «I came to accompany a friend and I decided to stay, even though I know I won't be caught", Lorella says, university of 25 years. Even those who are not new to television are queuing up, like Mariastella Roselli, 60 years, appeared a few years ago in a Caparezza video. The selections will continue throughout the afternoon, waiting for the staff to examine all and 200 the participants, to find one suitable for the Big Brother house.

Nigeria: Boko Haram seized 110 students

Reporting of Roman correspondence

Fears have turned into reality: yesterday for the first time, a week after the events, the Nigerian president, Muhammadu Buhari, he acknowledged that at least 110 students of Girls Science Secondary School of Dapchi, in the north-east of the country, they were actually kidnapped by Boko Haram during the attack launched last year 19 February. The news was given during a meeting with a delegation of former hostages of the jihadist group, released earlier this month: «I have ordered all security agencies in the country to protect our schools – declared the Head of State – and to return the kidnapped girls to their families».
Initially the authorities had denied the hypothesis of the kidnapping, hypothesizing that they simply could have dispersed to nearby villages, to escape the murderous fury of Islamic terrorists. Unfortunately, what happened in Chibok in April was therefore repeated 2014: they were at the time 276 the high school girls ended up hostage of this criminal gang. Muhammadu Buhari was elected the following year with the promise of bringing them home and eradicating the jihadist group. a part, actually, come back in, upon granting lavish ransoms and the release of dangerous prisoners.
But now the governor of Yobe State, where the new raid took place, he criticized the lack of security in his territory and highlighted how in Dpachi, at the time of the assault, there was no military garrison. Boko Haram, dal 2009, has already provoked further 20 thousand deaths and 2,6 millions of displaced people. Read More

Discouraged young Italians: their pension will be insufficient

PensionsReporting of Wall Street Italia
Of Alessandra Caparello

The research “The Re-Evolution of Pensions: Report on the State of the Art of Italian pensions, conducted in collaboration with Prometeia and for which they were interviewed 1.367 individuals (aged between 18 e 74 years), aims to understand the investment and protection needs of Italian families, the demand for savings products and their level of understanding of the social security system. For the majority of those interviewed, costs represent the main obstacle to the use of supplementary pension funds, although the fees of supplementary pension funds are less than a quarter of those of mutual funds and other private pension products.
As he points out Antonio Iaquinta, head of institutional business in Italia di State Street Global Advisors, the research is a clear invitation to the next government to do more.

“The message is clear: in Italy a greater commitment, promoted by the Government, to inform and educate the population about the advantages of investing in supplementary pension funds. Communications with workers must be simple, engaging and designed to help them take action. This is possible through the use of information materials that help workers understand pensions and facilitate the decision-making process. We believe that a promotional campaign organized by the Government could be an effective way of educating workers about supplementary pension funds and dispelling myths on the topic. This could also be useful in restoring workers' confidence in pensions. Furthermore, i pension funds should regularly review the asset allocation of their entry funds. At the moment, a significant portion of these sectors is predominantly invested in government bonds, which have not generated high returns in recent years and are unlikely to generate them in the short term. It is therefore important that pension funds diversify their allocations to improve risk-adjusted returns for their members.".

We are resigned to not counting for anything: the electoral void and the wars in the Middle East

Of Alberto Negri
We are resigned to not counting for anything: the electoral void and the wars in the Middle East
Source: Alberto Negri

Understanding the tangle of interests of the powers in conflict in the Middle East and throughout the crisis that reaches Asia is a challenge because the states and actors involved are entangled in contradictory alliances: the fundamental friend-enemy relationship itself has become mutable and in some cases almost indistinguishable. They seem like distant things but if we follow the thread of events we see how these events directly involve us, also here in Italy, where we get stabbed, in a real or figurative sense, for electoral events devoid of any tactical and strategic interest. As if we were resigned to not counting for anything and instead we too carry heavy responsibilities.

The fight against terrorism, heralded for years, reveals itself, more every day, a tragic mockery. Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and China, in recent days they are trying to stop the American initiative to put Pakistan on the list of countries financing terrorism after Washington froze US aid to Islamabad. The Pakistanis are sending a thousand soldiers to the Gulf to support the Saudis in the interminable war in Yemen against the Shiite Houthi rebels, China has a contingent of 12 thousand men in Pakistan to protect its ports while Turkey is historically linked to Islamabad by economic and military relations.

But beyond these obvious interests there is much more. Saudi Arabia has financed jihadist groups with an anti-Iranian function for years, is more or less directly involved in September 11th, while Erdogan's Turkey maneuvers thousands of jihadists in the anti-Assad war. Pakistan was for a decade, together with the Saudis, the key ally of the USA in the war against the USSR in Afghanistan but it is also the country that hosted the fugitive Osama bin Laden and supports the Taliban and jihadist groups in Afghanistan against the American-led coalition. Old and new opposite extremisms

Of Marcello Veneziani
Old and new opposite extremisms
Source: Marcello Veneziani
Salesmen vs populists
They want us to believe that the issue of the day is fascists versus anti-fascists, or in the alternative, the re-emergence of opposing extremisms. And instead the derby being played in Italy is different: it's touts against populists.
The four main forces that divide the political and electoral field are in fact two asymmetrical pairs.
On one side there are the populists, the grillini and Salvini. And there are two formidable salesmen against them, Berlusconi and Renzi. Then there are their soft stunt doubles like Gentiloni, Di Maio, To Tajani (Salvini is not equipped with prosthetics).
If populists fan on people's discomfort and on anti-political or anti-immigrant protests, the salesmen carry out their propaganda door to door, they aim to offer admirable personal rather than social advantages. Money here, pensions there, TV license fees pardoned, prodigious relief, miraculous rebates, dentures, food for dogs and cats, horses and canaries are neglected.
This is the disheartening spectacle before us. Read More
