A television interview in which a senior Qatari official reveals the background to the war in Syria quickly went viral on Arab social networks, coinciding with the disclosure of a top secret NSA document confirming that the armed opposition in Syria was under the direct command of foreign governments since the early years of the conflict.

While the war in Syria is gradually drawing to a close, new revelations emerge almost weekly in the form of testimonies from senior officials involved in the destabilization of Syria and sometimes even email messages with further details on secret maneuvers aimed at overthrowing Assad's government. While much of this information merely confirms what has long been known to those who have never accepted the simplistic propaganda that has dominated the mainstream media, the pieces of the puzzle continue to fit together, providing future historians with a fuller picture of the true motivations behind this war.

This clarity process has been facilitated, as expected, by the continuing conflict between the former allies of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Saudi Arabia and Qatar, both of whom accuse each other of having financed Islamic State and al-Qaeda terrorists (which, ironically, it's true in both cases). And so, before the eyes of the whole world, all the skeletons in the closet of a GCC now in the process of imploding come out, as for years almost all the Gulf monarchies have financed jihadist movements in countries such as Syria, Iraq and Libya.

Qatar's top official is former Prime Minister Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber al-Thani himself, the one who oversaw operations in Syria on behalf of Qatar until 2013 (also as Foreign Minister) who we see here with then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in this photo from January 2010 (incidentally, the Qatar World Cup committee 2022 made a donation of 500.000 dollars to the Clinton Foundation in 2014).In an interview on Qatar TV, bin Jaber al-Thani reveals that his country, alongside Saudi Arabia, of Türkiye and the United States, has supplied the jihadists with weapons since the beginning of these events (In the 2011).

Al-Thani also compared the covert operation to “a hunting trip” — in which the prey was President Assad together with his supporters — one “teach” which by her admission she managed to escape (since Assad is still firmly in power: the term used is “al-sayda “, which in the Gulf Arabic dialect generally serves to designate the hunting of animals or prey for sport). Although Thani has denied any credible accusation of having personally supported ISIS, the ex-prime minister's words suggest there was direct Gulf and US support for Al-Qaeda in Syria (al-Nusra) since the first years of the war, and they even insinuate that Qatar is in possession of “documents” and evidence that the war was provoked to bring about regime change.

Based on Zero Hedge's translation, while acknowledging that Gulf States have armed jihadists in Syria with the approval and support of the United States and Turkey, al-Thani states: “I don't want to go into details, but we have complete documentation on our intervention [in Syria].” He claims he is King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia (who reigned until his death in 2015) and the United States reserved for Qatar a leading role in covert operations to wage a proxy war.

The ex-prime minister's comments, although very revealing, are aimed at defending and justifying Qatar's support for terrorism, and to accuse the United States and Saudi Arabia of having placed all the responsibility for the war against Assad on Qatar.
