HOW TO DEFEND YOURSELF FROM THE WORLD'S THREATS
The World threatens us in two ways: seducing and terrifying us.
He seduces us by showing us his sophisticated and smiling face in the public arena: the theatre, the cinema, television, the newspapers, books and in particular 'Internet'; as well as in society as a whole with its decadent morality, his indecent fashions, his conventional ways of behavior, and with its specious maxims as: 'Let us crown ourselves with roses before they wither’ (Sap 2,8).
Thus the world presents itself as desirable, admirable, brave, and even the sum of his indignities is noble, of his vanities and baseness, arousing lusts in man to drag him to Hell.
The World terrorizes us with organized persecution against the worshipers of the one Triune God: the legal persecution against Catholic teaching in schools, and against public signs of the Catholic Faith in schools, in hospitals and private workplaces; against marriage, large families, and parents who insist on raising their children Catholicly and dressing modestly; the psychological persecution against all those who publicly profess their Faith and who tend to lead a decent life, devoted, and sink.
The remedy to these threats is to courageously face Eternity and look at the World in the light of Faith.. Then he will appear to us as the enemy of our Lord Jesus Christ, in absolute opposition to him.
Because of this, you have to make a choice: a choice for Him with our whole being: fighting and energetically resisting the World to save our soul. We cannot serve two masters; and whoever wants to be a friend of this World makes God the enemy (Gc 4,4).
THE REMEDY TO THE WORLD'S THREATS
On a practical level, Father Tanquerey offers the following advice:
1) Read and reread the Gospel and pray to imbue us with the spirit of Faith;
2) Avoid dangerous opportunities, knowing that even if we live in the World, we must preserve ourselves from his spirit, as the Lord prayed to the Father: 'I do not ask that you take them away from the world but that you guard them from the Evil One';
3) Being ready to deny with our words the maxims of the World as they are opposed to the infallible truth, saying boldly: 'It's false!’; Show non-believers or non-practitioners that there are sources of happiness beyond sense indulgence, to wealth, and success – such as pure joys within the family, the satisfaction of a duty faithfully performed, the peace of a good conscience, and the joys of practicing religion;
4) Exercising influence on the children of the World with an example of life opposite to theirs, remembering the words of the Lord 'Vos estis lux mundi’ and 'Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven’ (Mt 5,16). Thus we will also act for their conversion with our words, with our example, and ideally by organizing groups of influential Catholics to put pressure on ecclesiastical and civil authorities, to change laws and society;
5) Encourage lukewarm and fearful Catholics to fight against the tyranny of human respect, of indecent fashions, and legal and psychological persecution.
In a word: no compromise with the World to enjoy its empty and polluted pleasures, to seek his esteem and love! But the courageous and univocal choice of our Lord Jesus Christ, our only joy and consolation here on earth, and then to Heaven for all Eternity.
