WHY’ TWO WEIGHTS AND TWO MEASURES? (N.D.R.)(AUTOMATIC READING)
Carol Davidsen was the Department Head “Media Targeting” of Obama's staff in the elections of 2012 and is considered an expert in online election campaigns in America. In a public conference, three years after Obama's election, revealed something that went unnoticed at the time but is now shocking in light of the Cambridge Analityca scandal: “We were able to ingest the entire US social network on Facebook”.
In the same speech he stated that Democrats arbitrarily acquired data on American citizens to which Republicans did not have access; and this happened with the complicity of the American company which allowed it so much so that Davidsen is forced to admit that “there was an unfair information acquisition imbalance”
FACEBOOK ALLOWED OBAMA TO STEAL CITIZENS' DATA
In recent days on Twitter, Davidsen returned to the issue by confirming that Facebook was surprised when they realized that Obama's staff had “sucked the entire social graph” (that is, the system of connections between users) “but they didn't stop us once they understood what we were doing”.
The reason, adds Davidsen is that “they told us they were on our side”.
In other words, Facebook allowed Obama to steal the data of American citizens and use it for his presidential campaign, as a company aligned with the Democrats.
On the other hand already in 2012, on Time, a long article by Michael Scherer explained how Obama had taken possession of Americans' data on Facebook with the aim of intercepting young voters. Exactly the same way Cambridge Analytica did it for the Trump campaign: through an app that stole the data not only of those who had authorized it, but also of the network of friends on Facebook who are unaware of having their privacy violated. Only then it was hailed as one of the new horizons of online politics and described by Teddy Goff, the digital chief of the Obama campaign, “the most innovative technological tool” of the new electoral campaigns.
ZUCKERBERG AND DEMOCRATS
The close connection between Facebook and the US Democratic Party continued even in the latest elections as John Podesta's emails relentlessly reveal, the powerful head of Hillary Clinton's election campaign, published by Wikileaks.
It's the 2 January of 2016, quando Sheryl Sandberg, Executive director of Facebook and de facto number two of the company, writes Podesta an email wishing him a Happy New Year, stating: “I'm thrilled with the progress Hillary is making”.
It is the period in which preparations are being completed for the nomination for the Democratic Party primaries which will start in February; and Hillary's Chief of Staff's response leaves no room for doubt: “I look forward to working with you to elect the first female president of the United States”.
Sheryl Sandberg (today one of the Facebook executives at the center of the scandal) she is the woman that Zuckerberg strongly wanted in his company by tearing her away 2008 to the direct competitor Google.
The manager, always democratic, he had worked in Bill Clinton's administration as chief of staff to Larry Summers, the Secretary of the Treasury, wanted by Hillary's husband.
The relationship between Podesta and Sandberg is long-standing. In August of 2015 she writes to him to ask if he would be willing to meet Mark Zuckerberg directly. Facebook's big boss is interested in meeting people who “help him understand how to make a difference on the policy issues he cares about most” e “understand effective political operations to advance goals” topics he cares about, come “immigration, education and scientific research”. And who could have done it better than the guru of the election campaign of the one they were all convinced, she would become the next president of the United States?
CONCLUSION
The Cambridge Analytica scandal which was supposed to be yet another attack against Trump and his election is turning into a boomerang for Democrats and above all for Facebook; the company is now at the center of controversy for a business model that is based precisely on the hoarding and transfer of our privacy data which it possesses at the moment in which we enter our lives, our images, friendships and our identity within social media.
But the question is above all political: what is now a scandal because it was done for Trump's election campaign, it was deemed a great innovation when Obama did it. With the addition of one detail of no small importance: than in the case of Obama, Facebook knew about this and allowed Americans' data to be stolen.
Perhaps, within his “my fault”, this is what Zuckerberg and Facebook leaders should answer to public opinion for.
