“Italians do not exist and we are more different between east and west than between north and south”. It is the title of an article on the front page of the online website Corriere della Sera. According to Davide Pettener, anthropologist of the Department of Biological Sciences, Geological and Environmental Sciences of the University of Bologna, who created a bank of DNA samples to trace the genetic history of Italians, the Italian people would not exist. We know very well that there are differences among Italians, but this does not mean not being a nation. One can be Ligurian, Piedmontese, Sicilian, Calabrian and at the same time feel Italian. Before biology we have a language that unites us, we have a common history and traditions which may perhaps be different from region to region, but they are Italian cultures and traditions. As well as the dialects which are perhaps the most evident symbol of Italian pluralities. We have always known that our Republic is open and capable of guaranteeing differences. From here to saying that Italians do not exist just because a Region was constituted with the DNA of different peoples compared to another, It seems really out of place to me.".

“It seems strange to me that such a study comes to light precisely at a time when a sovereignist wave is forming in Italy and a concept of the State based on the principle of defense of one's identity is being established. I see us, in having put it on the page now, a globalist perspective more aimed at encouraging the disintegration of peoples from their historical fabric, cultural and social, in favor of that mixture of cultures typical of globalist ideology, what else. Starting precisely from questioning the very concept of national identity. After all, if we take it for granted that Italians don't exist, then we must also recognize that Germans and Spanish don't even exist, but only an abstract man, stateless and rootless, which can live anywhere because it is the same in every part of the world. So it's very good that thousands of African immigrants arrive in Italy, because when Italians don't exist it makes no sense to defend the borders".
How can we defend ourselves at this point from this ideological approach?
“The problem lies in the fact that sovereignism is considered synonymous with centralism, or worse, fascism, when instead it could very well contemplate within itself a federalist model aimed at protecting and safeguarding the differences between Italian regions. A federalism united, however, by identitarianism, that is, from the concept of belonging to a single homeland. The fact is that, at a time when sovereignism is winning, we try in every way to counter it. When it is no longer possible to beat him on a political level, we resort to anthropological analyses, biological and sociological which Italians care nothing about. Moreover, sovereignism is already evident in Italian football. When the national team plays we are all Italians, we defend the Tricolor and sing the Mameli Hymn from Palermo to Trieste, without distinction".
For years it has been said that differences had to be defended, while today these differences almost become a fault, the weapon to demonstrate that the Unification of Italy was in practice a useless event. We are at the failure of the Risorgimento?
"Absolutely not. Indeed, I say that a new Risorgimento is needed and the sovereignist demands are going precisely in this direction. The paradox lies in the fact that promoting these forces is a party like the League which was born precisely with the aim of fighting and overcoming state centralism. This is the best demonstration of how sovereignism and federalism are not at all incompatible with each other. After all, it was Carlo Cattaneo himself who promoted the idea of ​​a federalist unitary state as opposed to Mazzini's idea of ​​a centralist unitary state. I believe that today we must start again from Cattaneo's ideas. The truly great reform for Italy would be precisely in a sovereignist federalism that defends national identity in its many nuances".
