Long thoughts are needed. Left and right. Long thoughts on which to underpin the processes of change, political and social. Long thoughts that are the exact opposite of old ideological visions, of the rigid (and unrealistic) nineteenth-century style “posters”.. Above all, there is a need for renewed representative tools, able to give voice to the concrete needs of society, projecting them onto broader scenarios. In this context, the role of trade unions needs to be rethought. It's a topic these days. And it is a crucial theme that does not allow ambiguity.
When the Minister for Economic Development and Labour, Luigi Di Maio, raises the question of union representation, with the idea of ​​"stimulating an updating process", what does he mean ? He wants to continue pursuing the paths of delegitimization of the trade union world, carry on, in recent years by the government left, or hypothesize other working hypotheses ? Does it intend to support the old conflictual logics or look at more organic participatory solutions ?
While waiting to understand the orientations of the Minister and more generally of the current executive, it does not seem trivial to relaunch the topic of co-management, in its broadest and most complete meaning.
Bed, for years, together with that of "social participation" from a "redistributive" perspective (compared to salary levels) and “compensatory” (compared to the attacks of capitalism and classist exasperations) the theme of co-management today takes on a very particular value starting from the issues strictly linked to economic growth and the related "system" insufficiencies, regarding the representation of skills, to economic planning, to production and employment policies.
Placing the issue of co-management at the center of the current debate on economic recovery and employment does not mean underestimating extraordinary forms of intervention, aimed at “buffering” ongoing emergencies, but go further, that is, looking beyond the crisis, grasping it, for our country, the underlying reasons and trying to bring to a solution all the negative "inputs" from a production point of view.
Co-managing change means this: finally address the "structural" issues of the crisis, based on an organic and inclusive “long-term” method, which focuses on "intangible capital" as an essential factor of social growth and therefore of increased productivity, finally going beyond the anti-historical contrasts between capital and labor, encouraging the growth of a new development model, based on skills, participation, responsibility, the merit.
Beyond slogans and easy one-liners, a new season of growth for Italy can only start from here: from the rewriting of a new political and economic-social lexicon, around which to update parameters, production strategies, intervention policies, even a “vision of life and the world”, a long thought in short, that gives wings to the desired process of change. With the role of work as a tool for social emancipation at the centre, from companies to the entire country system.
