FIFTH COLUMN

The political situation in which we find ourselves is truly curious and unprecedented: there are two forces that are becoming more and more radicalized every day, opposite each other but they govern together; and in between, to the center, there are oppositions. I don't think there are equals in the world and in our history.
On the one hand there are the grillini who are enemies of both modernization, as demonstrated by their battles against the Tav, great works, the infrastructures, development, but at the same time they are enemies of tradition, as demonstrated by their position against the defense of the family, considered a return of losers to the Middle Ages; their refractoriness to national issues, to safety, to the protection of civilization and love of patriotism. On the opposite side are Salvini's Northern League supporters which present themselves in exactly the opposite direction as the force that on the one hand wants to modernize the country, make it efficient, full of construction sites and public works and on the other hand it wants to safeguard the natural family, traditional society, civilization and national security.
In the middle, Instead, there are opposition forces: the left embraces modernization but is against tradition (I'll simplify to understand) and Berlusconism is for modernization but is internally divided between the liberal model and the conservative model. If the League embraces, albeit in a political and polemical version God, homeland and family, the grillini on the contrary are for Degrowth, the Global and the egalitarian Network. The Northern League members are futurists when it comes to development and traditionalists when it comes to values; the grillini on the contrary are modernist in terms of values ​​and "medieval" in terms of structures and infrastructures.
In foreign policy the pattern repeats itself, with the League decisively choosing the Western camp but not giving up privileged attention towards Putin's Russia and the grillini choosing the South American path and winking at whoever happens to, China included, without a strategic vision. Their only one, fragile point of union is the criticism of European technocracy and its impositional model of austerity and submission.
It's an atypical scenario, which does not explode just because it is in mutual interest to remain in government. But we can learn a surprising lesson. Beyond the political landscape and the forces at play, a deep and tenacious bipolar model emerges, which follows, in today's themes and ways, the historical and ideological division between right and left, or rather between identity and global. Progressives are for modernity, conservatives are for modernization; the radicals are for emancipation, identitarians are for civilization; progressives are for the defense of the environment, conservatives are for the protection of nature; progressives are for global citizenship, the traditional communitarians are for the homeland, family and religious ties. Then there are crossings, contaminations, field passes and contingent or merely opportunistic choices. But the bipolar picture holds and permeates the forces at play. I go so far as to say that the forces currently prevailing are transient interpreters of that polarization. But they pass, instead those two worlds remain. The difference is pre-political, precultural, anthropological, passionate.
In this bipolar situation based on ideas, sensitivity, vehemently opposing mentalities, today there is no force in the field and no institution capable of mediating, indicating a possible area of ​​compromise. To give an example from these days: on the subject of family, the gap is clear and does not include intermediate areas, I am for or against the Family Forum. The Northern League members and Brothers of Italy are in favor, the left are against it, the Bonino and the grillini. The Berlusconi supporters are not in the middle but are in turn divided between one and the other (Gasparri-Catholic trend or Prestigiacomo-Carfagna trend) and Berlusconi sways, goes where the core business takes it. What is missing in the Italian political scene has always been too cumbersome: mediation at the center, Christian Democrat, inclined to compromise. I am photographing a situation and I am not expressing a wish. The gap has widened and sooner or later the government in power will end up inside the crack, when they realize it's a ravine.
