Renzi: the scrapper has scrapped himself
The news arrived at 18.15 yesterday afternoon: Matteo Renzi he resigned as secretary of the PD (maintaining the position of senator).
The curtain has fallen on the elections, the verdict was clear (and it was predictable). The centre-right is the first coalition in the country with the League surpassing Forza Italia, placing itself as the third force in the country. The Movement 5 Stars it is, Instead, the first party in the country, after having broken through especially in the South. The PD instead collapsed under the 20% and his critics led to the inevitable decision that many expected him to take in the aftermath of the referendum of 4 December.
I already wrote it in 2014 in the unauthorized biography of the former prime minister, The B side. by Matteo Renzi: like in any game of chance, the career of the former mayor of Florence and then Prime Minister was burn the stages and burn yourself in turn.

The gambler who was in a hurry

He predicted it «The Economist» in a dated article 22 March 2014, describing it as a «Gambler in a rush», a gambler which is in a hurry. Already then the press had embraced satire by portraying the prime minister as a teleseller, a magician, an illusionist. One who shoots burst of promises, one after the other without being able to realize them.
In fact, the British weekly wrote that "Mr Renzi" is known for being a risk taker («is known to be a risk-taker»), busy knocking on the doors of his Eurozone colleagues to ask them to "bet" on Italy. «Running can be good, but Renzi should be careful not to stumble" (in the sense of not making false steps), the English weekly suggested almost four years ago.
This warning had already been raised by us in the aftermath of the infamous "relay": not everyone had appreciated the aggressive way in which Enrico Letta had been torpedoed and above all the doubt had begun to spread that Renzi could burn himself with his own hands. In my unauthorized biography I had dug into Matteo Renzi's personal and political history to discover the "hidden" side of the prime minister, with interviews, photo, documents collected in the area. I had also analyzed our venial sins: rush, ambition, inconsistency.

Il “Leticide”: the beginning of the end

In the aforementioned "Leticide” Renzi's first venial peccadillo had become apparent: the rush. That same rush that led him to scale the heights of national political power in just ten years and to collapse in another four years. A parabola which was easily predictable. The Renzi man quickly demonstrated that he had the fangs of a wolf behind the bewitching appearance of the lamb which embodied the symbol of "hope", wanting to pose as one faded copy of Barack Obama: Unscrupulousness in politics causes blame but at the same time gives rise to respect and fear on the part of colleagues and adversaries. Except that in the long run it creates the empty around and enemies ready to strike in the shadows when you are weakest.
It is now well known that Renzi did not like half measures: it has always been a whirlwind of promises that he dispenses with confidence and proposing dates so close together that they make your head spin. And in the vertigo phase one forgets what he had assured a moment before.
If he then forgets it too and it's a repetition compulsion, still remains a mystery. The fact is that in recent years there have been too many promises, the failures have accumulated and the rift with the electorate it became more and more dramatic. The ambition is unbridled to say the least which allowed him to pave his way to the pantheon of politics, without too many problems, opponents and colleagues, it is the sin that has now led him to the debacle, making it progressively more and more unpleasant and disconnected from reality.
Combined with an excessive dose of presumption (since he was a child he dreamed of becoming President of the Republic!). It's one thing to know how to present yourself in public, speak off the cuff, improvise, give smiles and jokes, give high fives to children you meet on the street, taking selfies or tweeting on Twitter, another is to implement the reforms. And Renzi missed precisely this.
He was and remains an undisputed champion in communication, speak off the cuff, sudden, he responds in kind and silences anyone who dares to put him in difficulty (on this front all he lacks is D'Alema's icy gaze which would make even a Nobel Prize winner feel uncomfortable). His modern and counter-current attitude, informal, hits the mark. He charmed Italians with his charisma and ability to address the public, not so much (or not only) to journalists.
On the other, but, he surrounded himself with Yes Man, some of them embarrassing, unprepared, unbearable and incapable, who were unable to guide him in his choices or at least advise him. Some of them, Indeed, they have tarnished him in his consensus, transmitting the idea of a group of politicians insensitive to the real problems of the country.
This is also why the polls on Sunday decreed his political end and the announcement came yesterday after a succession of rumors and denials.

Elections: when to talk about “protest vote” it's not enough anymore

So let's get back to the elections. It will be said once again that it was a protest vote. The foreign press records the victory of the "populist and far-right parties" and the concern for the markets. No. We can say, in a nutshell, for now, that they were all pro-Brussels parties severely punished, neo-liberals and globalists. And from here we should start with many and numerous reflections that take note of the result and the underlying reasons that pushed citizens to vote like this, exasperated by the worst electoral campaign ever.
You will agree: it was the worst Italian election campaign ever. Not just for the electoral law, not just for candidates (resurrected through, turncoat and simply unpresentable), but also and above all for the climate of violence that has spilled onto the streets with very serious episodes. It is as if the phenomenon of haters had escaped from social networks to infect the entire society, thus showing the worst side of human coexistence: desperation has taken on the profile of social madness.
Instead of focusing on electoral programs, Attention was focused on hackneyed television slogans and public opinion was distracted from the struggle between fascism and anti-fascism (using like this two golden rules of social manipulation, il divide and rule and the distraction of the masses from the real problems).
How could we wait, everything has been spectacularized and trivialized.
Let's think about the slogans of the PD: vote for science, vote for the PD... in fact the PD has collapsed and Lorenzin's list is around a 0,45. The topic of vaccines, censored or denigrated in the press, he had instead, until the end, a specific weight. As well as the real problems that grip the population and which are branded as "populist": crisis, Work, unemployment, safety, immigration, pensions, ecc. Precisely the "populist" parties, League and Movement 5 Stars were awarded at the polls.
This result demonstrates that the population is now aware that the real enemy is to be found in liberalism, in the strong Atlanticist powers, in the ferocity of the market and its tormentors, in social inequality, in the dismantling of social conquests, in false philanthropists actually financial speculators and behind-the-scenes directors of coups and color revolutions.
It must be remembered that in recent years the the battle for civil rights has in fact overshadowed and swallowed up that for social rights, leading to an increasingly poor and precarious society. Civil rights are sacrosanct, but they were used to shift attention away from the undermining of social rights. In fact, all of them were severely punished pro-Brussels parties, neo-liberals and globalists.
The people have not given up on the concrete idea of change or at least on dreaming of it. Now we'll see if it was yet another illusion, or not…
The future depends on us and by who will now represent us. We should always remember this and focus our attention on real problems and real “enemies”, instead of spending our time slaughtering each other in the usual war between the poor. And we should have understood that our consensus is precious and that it is not only exercised at the polls, but always, in our daily choices and actions.
