As for the "protective" role of the United States, perhaps the Syrian Kurds would have something to say, given that they were handed over to the Turks after having collaborated with Washington in the fall of ISIS in Raqqa. Yet in that area, a Manbij, over two thousand US soldiers are deployed while troops from American security companies patrol the former capital of the Caliphate in an area where a coalition of Kurds and Arabs is active. The skies and land of Syria are teeming with planes, drones, missiles, soldiers in uniform, militiamen and mercenaries: a fatal “accident” is possible at any moment.
The truth is that if the US intervenes, it does so to cover up its failure, Turkey's change of side and the sensational failures of their allies who wanted to overthrow the Assad regime, first and foremost Saudi Arabia.
Never let the US intervene to "protect" the Palestinians in Gaza: they always veto any investigation into Israel at the UN while in Syria they don't need proof. This is the well-known "double standard" for which not only the Arabs but also we have not trusted the USA for a long time: at least until proven otherwise.
But let's get to the heart of the matter. The Western Raids, if there will be, the conditions of the Syrians will change for the better? Obviously not. On the contrary, they will give another push to the balkanization of Syria.
Turkey has already won a piece of it at the expense of the Kurds and will put the Arabs in their place. The country will be divided into cantons where the regime - which will try to recover the oil wells with the help of the Russians and Iranians - will try to include the Christian minorities, Shiites and Sunnis _ to act as a buffer with the Sunnis. Idlib, jihadists' "dumping ground"., it has already become the dark tomb full of dark omens of the Syrian revolution. Many refugees will never find their address again if they return home.
There will probably remain a "useful" Syria in the hands of Assad but not in full control because it is in Israel's sights, who in American plans will have to act as a regional guardian. But the real problem will be what to do against Iran and how to keep an eye on Erdogan, a NATO ally who has changed sides. And then, faced with bigger problems, we will be able to forget Syria and the Syrians, how the Afghans “forgot” themselves, the Iraqis and the Libyans.
