No death sentence for the apostate and freedom for those who want to leave Islam and embrace other faiths. It's a historic position, the one assumed by the highest religious representation of Morocco, the Higher Council of Ulema, which continues to courageously pave the way for reformism within Islam – at least his own – without shadows or ambiguity. We are therefore aiming for a high level of discussion, even taking a step back from the past. The Council in fact rejects its previous fatwa of 2012 according to which Moroccans guilty of apostasy would have a single destiny: death. A common rule for all Muslim countries, but provided for in various forms by the legal regulations in force. In Morocco, for example, the death penalty is not contemplated, but the penal code speaks of detention for the apostate which can go up to 3 years.
A position, but, which had already caused a lot of discussion at the time in a country that has made religious pluralism its flagship, and who more than others pays attention to it and carries out immense work to defend his position and vision of a "moderate Islam". The Ulema Council therefore, tries to draw a clear line on a very current issue, politically and socially inconvenient and which in the future could present itself as a deadly trap because in the country they have revealed, without any more filters, inhabitants who moved from Sunnism to Shiism (the first Shiite centers opened only last year) as well as Christianity or, really, all’ateismo. Voices that have recently come out of hiding, challenging the hypocrisy of those who know them, but he doesn't want to recognize them.
