“Catholics between Europeanism and populism. The challenge to nihilism” is the new book by Matteo Castagna (Solfanelli Editions, pages 248, € 17).
Although the author is not a professional historian, Castagna making use of the comparison with the best contemporary theoretical production, try to understand Italian history, Western and Catholic by reducing the unilateral and misleading interpretations of those who tend to smooth over the great conflict between integral Catholicism and modernism, flared up at the end of the nineteenth century, “which then continued in the final conflict between the Pacellian front and Montini's Christian Democratic front, great politician but weak theologian, disciple of Maritain's secularist and globalist ecumenism".
Veronese, married, class 1976, collaborator of Veronanews, Vvox e The Truth, Matthew Castagna, He defines himself as one of the Catholics faithful to Tradition who began to be interested in politics 14 years (until he is elected, In the 1998, as councilor of the third district of Verona, being the youngest in the city).

It is the industrialized country that has recovered best from the consequences of the global financial crisis 2008, the second best in the entire European Union for unemployment rate (5,9 percent) and the first for employment rate (82 percent of the workforce); its GDP is growing at the rate of 3 percent per year thanks also to investments in development and research, the highest in all of Europe (3,3 percent of GDP) and is positioned first in the world rankings of sustainable development, entrepreneurial opportunities and economic competitiveness. Yet in the elections scheduled for Sunday 9 September its main governing party risks recording its worst result of the last few 100 years, while the two opposition parties of the far left and especially the far right are credited with the best result in their young history.
How is this possible? It is possible if you are in Sweden, and if the best socio-economic data in the world or in Europe are accompanied by disturbing statistics like those that have recently hit the headlines: in a country of 10 million inhabitants where up to 10 years ago shootings were almost unheard of, some have been well recorded 320 last year, together with 110 murders and 7.226 reported rapes, il 10 percent more than 2016. On the other hand, he tells tempi.it, «I listened (what are youtube) the thought of one of these witch prizes, that a few days ago, when the Aquarius had not yet arrived in Valencia, he confessed: "I myself, I have to say, con realpolitik, which I was also ashamed of, I thought yesterday, I wished someone would die on the Aquarius ship. I said: and now, if a child dies, I want to see what happens to our government". There's no need to even specify who, in particular, made such a miserable reasoning why, judging by the non-reactions of the progressive world (and indeed from the official defenses of his words, that would have been "taken out of context") one might think that what escaped a single intellectual was the afterthought of many. An afterthought that is not only a sign of lack of humanity but also of little interest in the common good. I find the attitude of those who harbor within themselves such great hatred and contempt for their political adversary as profoundly barbaric that they wish for anything that could harm the enemy.: today that a child dies, tomorrow the spread will rise and Italy will go under. And look, I don't love this government at all, and the only explicit public position I took before the vote was against the League and the Five Star Movement, because I believed them (and I believe them) a danger for the Italian economy. One hundred and ten years ago the British author Israel Zangwill completed the play The Melting Pot. First performed in Washington in October 1908 — where it was enthusiastically applauded by President Theodore Roosevelt — it celebrates the United States as a gigantic melting pot that fuses together “Celts and Latins, Slavs and Teutons, Greeks and Syrians — blacks and yellows — Jews and Gentiles” to form a single people.
"Yes", declares the hero of the play (like Zangwill's father, a Jewish immigrant from Russia), “Est e Ovest, and North and South, the palm and the pine, the pole and the equator, the crescent and the cross... Here everyone will unite to build the Republic of Man and the Kingdom of God".
It is rather difficult to imagine a similar play written about the European Union at the beginning of the 21st century. Or rather, one could easily imagine a very different one. In it, the influx of migrants from all over the world would have exactly the opposite effect to that imagined by Zangwill. Far from leading to fusion, the European migration crisis is leading to fission. The play could be called The Meltdown Pot.
I believe more and more that the issue of migration will be seen by future historians as the fatal solvent of the European Union. In their considerations, Brexit will simply appear as the first symptom of the crisis. Their thesis will be that a massive Migration of peoples [migration of peoples, NdT] overwhelmed the project of European integration, revealing the weakness of the European Union as an institution and bringing voters back to national politics to find solutions.
