Controversy over the film dedicated to the Foibe: the Region asks for the dissolution of the Anpi
"Tuesday 5 February the film “Red Istria” will be shown in Italian cinemas. The protests of some Venetian sections of the ANPI have sent councilor Donazzan into a rage."
Tuesday 5 February, in 100 Italian cinemas, of which about twenty in Veneto, on the occasion of "Remembrance Day" (which will be officially celebrated on 10 February), “Red Land – Rosso Istria” will be screened, a film by Maximiliano Hernando Bruno which recalls the dramatic events suffered since September 1943 by the Istrian people, Fiumane, Julian and Dalmatians, persecuted, killed and driven from their homes and the land where they lived.
«The Veneto Region – explains the culture councilor, Cristiano Corazzari – wanted to support, together with other bodies and institutions, the creation of this film to pay homage to the many of our compatriots who paid for their 'being Italian' with their lives and with a very painful exile, their feeling of belonging to their homeland. The film tells the story of the martyrdom of Istrian student Norma Cossetto – concludes Corazzari –, one of the many victims of anti-Italian hatred that led to the massacre of thousands of innocents. Yet there are still those who shamelessly deny this ignominious page of history: as institutions we have the duty to respond to any form of shameful and unacceptable revisionism, to protect the memory and make the new generations aware of the tragedy and exodus of a people".

The Region's choice to still screen the film in theaters has sparked quite a bit of controversy by the Anpi sections (National Association of Italian Partisans) of Veneto. Supporters of former partisan groups argue that the historical reconstruction presented in the film “Red Istria” is not correct. A controversy that infuriated councilor Elena Donazzan, intervened on the issue with very weighty statements: «E’ time to say enough to the tolerance of “comrades who make mistakes”. Chi nega le foibe, the drama of the Italians of Istria, Fiume and Dalmatia and the ethnic cleansing of which they were victims cannot have citizenship. If the Anpi thinks it can get away with a press release, he didn't understand the gravity of the matter. The drama of these Italian brothers of ours has been consciously kept quiet for years, because the bad conscience of those who governed our nation with the complicity of the Communist party, he made reason of state prevail over truth and justice – continues Donazzan – but still today, after everything is finally known, there are deniers or reductionists around, but without indignation. I believe that if the Anpi will limit itself to another miserable press release, the institutions, to suffer from the President of the Republic who has the moral duty to defend the Italians and the memory of Norma Cossetto Gold Medal for Civil Valor, they must seriously think about dissolving the Anpi. Its reason for being, of self-celebration of the Resistance, today it has become a mystification of historical truth and increasingly leads to hatred and abuse – concludes the regional councilor – we don't need hate but truth and justice. Only in this way will we be able to think about building true national unity.".
