This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights [in English]. Signed by the United States and adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 10 December 1948, the document was a great and luminous step forward in articulating how human beings could organize their social and political systems in accordance with the ideals of democracy and civilization.
The United States has long mishandled the Universal Declaration (OF) as a weapon to be wielded selectively against officially designated enemies.
