The entire political-ideological movement linked to the sovereignist/populist alignment moves in a context and in a series of precise directions. Continuing along this path new questions arise, on crucial choices which can be responded to either with the dry alternative or with the affirmation of a plural ideological-political wave which despite having a very distinct central axis, contains “different” if not even “contrasting” options. As for the context,starting from the most obvious aspect, we must take note of the definitive drying up of the left political area but more precisely of Marxism. The death of Domenico Losurdo embodies a symbolic end of all "intellectually honest" Marxism with which it is still worth dealing and with which one can also find points of convergence for very concrete political battles. The same can be said for certain political subjectivities, representatives of that area. However, we must realize that Marxism is completely finished, and not for reasons of who knows what historical significance. It has reached its lowest point, the “0” of its descending parable.
The new era, the new millennium, the possibility of looking with a broad historical perspective must bring, and already brings, for those who haven't noticed, to the affirmation or rather the "return" of completely different principles and values that would be more appropriate to define as "spiritual". The inconsistency and "desolation" of the "materialist" and "economist" proposal of Marxism is very little in comparison and is no longer even felt. It is no coincidence that these war remnants of intellectuals, various groups and small groups, they no longer know what to do with the current phase. The worst of them bark fascist and racist, the best present us with the usual pappardelle about socialist revolutions, with the "economy at the center of everything" and the "class struggle" as the engine of historical changes. One hundred and ten years ago the British author Israel Zangwill completed the play The Melting Pot. First performed in Washington in October 1908 — where it was enthusiastically applauded by President Theodore Roosevelt — it celebrates the United States as a gigantic melting pot that fuses together “Celts and Latins, Slavs and Teutons, Greeks and Syrians — blacks and yellows — Jews and Gentiles” to form a single people.
"Yes", declares the hero of the play (like Zangwill's father, a Jewish immigrant from Russia), “Est e Ovest, and North and South, the palm and the pine, the pole and the equator, the crescent and the cross... Here everyone will unite to build the Republic of Man and the Kingdom of God".
It is rather difficult to imagine a similar play written about the European Union at the beginning of the 21st century. Or rather, one could easily imagine a very different one. In it, the influx of migrants from all over the world would have exactly the opposite effect to that imagined by Zangwill. Far from leading to fusion, the European migration crisis is leading to fission. The play could be called The Meltdown Pot.
I believe more and more that the issue of migration will be seen by future historians as the fatal solvent of the European Union. In their considerations, Brexit will simply appear as the first symptom of the crisis. Their thesis will be that a massive Migration of peoples [migration of peoples, NdT] overwhelmed the project of European integration, revealing the weakness of the European Union as an institution and bringing voters back to national politics to find solutions.
