Guareschi, del '68 se ne fece un baffo

Like today (yesterday for those reading, n.d.r.), fifty years ago, in the fateful '68, he went to the other world Giovannino Guareschi. He left the small world that few had described, to reach the big world, the one where that Lord lived who in his House gave advice to one of his fiery dependents on earth, Don Camillo. At least that's what Guareschi says.

He left early, Giovannino, a 60 years, after a troubled life, between concentration camp, prison under fascism and anti-fascism, plus a host of books translated all over the world, of very popular films that represented that fabulous post-war Italy, and adventures in the press, like his impertinent Candide who played a decisive role in the defeat of the social-communist popular front in the 1948 elections.
Giovannino died on 22 July '68 but he had time to write his last Don Camillo dedicated to today's young people. The book was released posthumously and marked the striking contrast between the old communist Peppone (that the anti-communist Guareschi had made sympathetic with his irrepressible humanity), the tough Don Camillo and a young, beardless protester, who was traveling on a motorbike with studded and fringed bags and a black jacket with a skull and the words "Veleno". Which becomes the boy's nickname for Guareschi and also the metaphor of the protest. "The Chinese" also arrive in the town of Brescello and upset the ideological geometries of the Italian-Stalinist Peppone and also displace the religious ones of the parish priest. Guareschi links the protest to the advent of the consumer societyi. For him the antagonism between the two phenomena is only occasional, related, not substantial. The agreement, kept silent to Italian citizens and without any mention on the Government's institutional websites, predicted that the immigrants transshipped onto Irish Navy ships in the Libyan SAR area were disembarked in Italian ports. Con 7 millions don't buy anything from us. Don't buy Facebook data from us, you don't buy advertising from us, Nothing".
In London, in the luxurious Mayfair hotel, the meeting that marked the beginning of the new political adventure. Together with Bannon and Raheem Kassam, former chief of staff of Nigel Farage and director of Breitbart, a large delegation from European anti-establishment movements showed up. Farage himself was there, Jerome Rivière of the National Rally (Ex Front National), Filip Dewinter of the Flemish Flemish Interest, the Republican congressman Paul Gosar (envoy of the very powerful Freedom Caucus, group of pro-Trump conservatives that Bannon wants to have on his side).
And then not exactly reassuring faces, Prominent exponents of ultra-right parties such as Sweden Democrats and True Finns who were initially supposed to stay out but at the last minute Bannon brought back because they were "perfect for the role". There is no news of the League's involvement in the London meeting. There is little chance, however, that the most hated strategist in America will not set the table with the most delicious dish, Matteo Salvini's League which is climbing the polls and conquers the spotlight every day with rejections at sea. Bannon has real admiration for the Italian Interior Minister. And if a place in the leadership of the Movement for Le Pen and Farage is already secured, it is unlikely that the Northern League secretary will remain out, which at the moment has a very different specific weight and knows a little about the dynamics of Strasbourg. Matteo Salvini's words in a very recent interview with the Washington Post dispel the doubts, to which he said he wanted to "put together a group that obtains a majority in the European Parliament".
The time has been ripe for a while now. We got wind of it two months ago, when he stopped in Rome on a European tour worthy of a rock star, exploding in an irrepressible enthusiasm for the imminent birth of a yellow-green government, fulfillment of a dream that Bannon would have liked to realize overseas, by his own admission, combining the impetuosity of Donald Trump with the charisma of Bernie Sanders. Not bad, life offered him another opportunity, and this time too the wind is blowing in his favor. Tic-tac, the hands run, the European elections are getting closer and the eurosceptics have a wild card on their side. Who wants a different Europe, liberals, moderate is warned: To stop Cyclone Bannon, something more will be needed than a few blue-starred flags on the streets of Brussels.

Let's say it clearly: Trump's policy is not at all "isolationist", as it seemed from the election campaign. American foreign policy is completely back under neocon control. Trump now clearly aims to disaggregate Europe, because it fears not only the economic but also the political growth of Germany. Perhaps it is no coincidence that Bannon is in Italy so often in recent months, on Trump's "exploratory mandate" or in his own interest, it doesn't matter. Trump is revealing the true face of his current administration: to all intents and purposes it continues to exercise that imperial role that the United States has had since the post-war period and which after the fall of the Berlin Wall, for a few years, they practiced on their own.
