Francesca Totolo, you raised a fuss with the story of Josefa's rescue; next week will come out your first book Inferno s.p.a. (Altaforte Editions), an in-depth analysis of the realities that revolve around the world of immigration by sea. Perhaps the moment has come when we will be able to open Pandora's box?
«Pandora's box has already been opened in 2017, when Luca Donadei's video, which showed the routes of non-governmental organizations in the Mediterranean, he documented what until then had only been hypothesized: NGO ships took migrants on board just a stone's throw from the coast of Libya, and not in the Sicilian Channel as reported by the Italian press. From that moment, thanks to painstaking research work, I managed to highlight all the gray areas of the organizations, from transhipments which certainly could not be defined as rescues, passing through the close collaboration with the Zawiya Militia, whose members were then arrested for aiding and abetting illegal immigration, up to the opacity of the NGOs' financial data. The red nail polish applied by the volunteers of Proactiva Open Arms with the aim of "calming up" the Josefa sinks, as if it were normal medical practice in cases of severe hypothermia, it was a further step to reveal the hypocrisy of self-styled humanitarians. From that smoky rescue, a short film broadcast on the ESPN channel was born, where we find ourselves the NBA star, Marc Gasol, as the “migrant savior”. His presence on board the ship Open Arms, with a troupe to be the envy of a major Hollywood production, it was certainly not accidental.
In fact, in your experience, what relationship exists between the activities of the non-governmental organizations you mention and the data relating to rescues and deaths?
«I have published several investigations on the matter. And give, provided by United Nations agencies, Unhcr e Iom, clearly highlight the relationship between the increase in deaths off the Libyan coast and the presence of NGOs. For example, In the 2016 with eight organizations present in the waters off Libya, the was touched negative record of dead migrants, ben 4.851, while in 2018, thanks to the consolidation of the agreements with the Government of Tripoli, the closure of ports to NGOs and the withdrawal of Doctors Without Borders from missions, Moas e Save The Children, the number of deaths dropped to 1.314.
Migrants are victims, first of all? of who and what?
«The main victims of business of reception unfortunately it was the migrants, deluded by the “those in charge marketing” hired by traffickers in their countries of origin, that they have promised wealth and welfare once it reached Italy and Europe. Migrants, to be able to pay the fare, they were often forced to sell family properties o, even worse, ad get into debt with the local underworld who then asked for the bill once they arrived in Italy. Many immigrants in fact, just landed, they ended up on the streets dealing on behalf of the Nigerian mafia, now the monopolist of the drug market. Worse fate befell the girls, go directly from their cities to Italian sidewalks, sex slaves and forced to sell their bodies by their own countrymen. Immigrants, in Italy, they are also victims of reception mismanagement. Many cooperatives, evidently interested only in the budget profit, they have kept the costs associated with food and accommodation for guests to a minimum, often housing them in inadequate and dilapidated structures, and feeding them with foods that are certainly not advisable for human beings. Evidently immigrants are considered only as a mere economic “resource”., and certainly not as people, especially by the most influential cooperatives that manage the largest reception centers. Furthermore, asylum seekers no longer benefiting from 35 euros per day, following the denial of international protection (the percentage was around 60 percent of total requests), they were immediately discharged from the reception centres, therefore finding themselves on the street with no possibility of survival within the law.
