Mattarella's end-of-year sermon, between yawns and best wishes to the immigrants

SERGIO MATTARELLA
Roma, 1 gen – Sequela of banalities, usual ability to tear yawns, greetings to the Pope and best wishes to the immigrants. Il end-of-year speech by the President of the Republic it could easily be summarized like this, without dwelling too much on the other obvious things reiterated here and there. Yet it was exactly that Mattarella wanting to specify the necessity of his sermon, started like this: “Dear fellow citizens, we are in the age of social media, in which many live connected online and continually communicate what they think and also what they do in daily life. Times and habits change but this appointment - born decades ago with the first President, Luigi Einaudi – it is not a formal ritual”.
It goes without saying that it is indeed a formal rite, which would also make sense if he managed to capture the attention of Italians and if Mattarella was able to arouse emotions. Instead, clearly, the plastered pose and the slow articulation of the casual words spoken last night, they simply provided the sleeping effect just when everyone was preparing to celebrate the New Year. “This speech allows me to convey what I have heard and received on many occasions over the year from many of our fellow citizens, almost giving them a voice in this way. And to do it from here, dal Quirinale, home of all Italians", Mattarella said. An excellent premise, there's nothing to say, a perfect incipit to then get to the essence of the message, or its conclusion: “I wish a happy new year to the five million immigrants who live there, they work, they go to school, they play sports, in our country".
From the “home of all Italians”, effectively, the President of the Italian Republic could only turn his thoughts to non-Italians. Right, from firefighters to children, there was no shortage of other references from Mattarella. But there is no doubt that yet another attempt to preach welcome and open doors has prevailed. The president then wanted to throw some digs at the government regarding the maneuver: “There are many issues we need to resolve”, Mattarella said, because "the great compression of the parliamentary examination and the lack of an appropriate discussion with social bodies now require a careful verification of the contents of the provision". Mattarella didn't forget to address, In the end, “warm greetings to Pope Francis”, thanking him “once again, for his teaching constantly aimed at promoting peace, social cohesion, the dialogue, commitment to the common good". Sweet dreams. Assuming you haven't already sunk into the arms of Morpheus.
