Salvini responds to Father Sorge who declared that Italy “she is no longer Christian because she is a Northern League member”. And he explains: “Behind that waved Rosary there are values, a culture, an identity, a tradition”
The League, through its leader Matteo Salvini, she seems determined to carry on, more and more, a cultural battle to bring the less progressive faithful of the Catholic Church Italian.
The challenge will be launched in particular to those high prelates and progressive theologians who, rooted in ideologies rather than ethical and moral principles, they attacked and, despite their ideological debacle, presumably they will continue to personally attack Salvini and the Northern League.
Salvini launched the last thrust late on Tuesday evening 28 May interviewed by Nicola Porro during a special of Fourth Republic. Replying angrily, without mentioning the name, to that priest who had declared that Italy “she is no longer Christian because she is a Northern League member”, the vice president of the Council replied: “But what problems does he have?!”, explaining, shortly after, That “behind that waved Rosary there are values, a culture, an identity, a tradition”.
The reference, not even very veiled, it is relative to what was said by Father Bartolomeo Sorge, the former director of Catholic Civilization and the Institute of Political Education “Pedro Arrupe” of Palermo who, are Twitter, he wrote that “Italy is a Northern League member, no longer Christian. The Northern League member says: 'Italians first'; the Christian: 'the rejected first'. Nor is it enough to kiss Jesus in public; Judas has already done it too”. Another Jesuit, the political scientist of Civiltà Cattolica Father Francesco Occhetta, on TV2000 he had declared that the use of religious symbols during electoral rallies and after the electoral outcome would represent “a sacral dimension linked to polytheism”, to one “sociological dimension of religion but not to faith”.

As is known, Salvini has long been attacked for his religious gestures during the last two election campaigns, but these gestures, as is easy to understand, they were not improvised but meditated. Already during the closing of the electoral campaign for the last political elections, il 24 February of 2018, Matteo Salvini had shown one in public Rosary chain, which had been given to him by an anti-trafficking priest, and he had sworn on the Gospel saying: “I swear to be faithful to my people, to the sixty million Italians, to serve you with honesty and courage, I swear to truly apply the provisions of the Italian Constitution which is ignored by some, and I swear to do so by respecting the teachings contained in this Holy Gospel”.
Last 18 May Salvini repeated the religious gesture, always in front of the Madonnina, this time entrusting Italy and young people in particular, al Immaculate Heart of Mary, saying: “I entrust Italy, my life and yours to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, which I'm sure will lead us to victory”.
Improvised gestures? Not at all! As it has written the expert on Vatican affairs Giacomo Galeazzi on the daily newspaper The Press of the 28 maggio, “the gestures and words of the Minister of the Interior are precise signals for a world that wants to see its values ​​better protected”.
The Catholic electorate, especially in Piedmont, Lombardy and Veneto, it poured towards the League and, despite the parole of Cardinals Bassetti and Parolin, of the Vatican spin doctor, another Jesuit, the father Antonio Spadaro, of the founder of the Bose Monastery, the accountant Enzo Bianchi, despite the articles of the followers of the Bologna school or the bishops' newspaper Future, despite the protests of some ideological convents, Italian Catholics certainly contributed to the doubling, within just one year, of the consensus of the League.
Galeazzi identified in sequence, among the characteristics of Salvini's takeover bid for part of the Catholic votes, the reclamation of Judeo-Christian roots eliminated from the European Constitution, the entrustment of Italy and Europe to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the kiss at the Rosary, the promise, already expressed in March in Verona, during the World Congress of Families, to defend life and fight againstuterus for rent, apologies for the boos to Pope Francis during the rally in Piazza Duomo (and from Porro Salvini added: “It would be a source of absolute pride for me to meet Pope Francis. I say this as a humble Christian”).
Now it is predictable that Salvini, leader of a party voted by one in three Italians, will only be able to seek dialogue with the Church, in particular the CEI and the Holy See, because to govern Italy no politician can ignore good neighborly relations with the Vatican and the Italian episcopate. For this reason it is foreseeable that Salvini will soon try to slow down the impulses of the Movement 5 position (starting with the rules that will soon be approved on advance treatment orders) and will modify one of his proposals, much opposed by Catholics, that relating to reopening of closed houses, because for Christians, women are sacred and cannot be considered a commodity.
It is equally probable that even a part of the ecclesial hierarchy will modify certain expressions and certain attitudes, in the Vatican, and is known throughout the world, diplomats of the highest level are trained. Diplomats who will no longer be able to ignore the “captain” Northern League member who, after the European elections he at least achieved the rank of “colonel”.
If it is certain that Salvini will not change his position on illegal immigration one iota, it will most likely show itself ever closer, supported by the Catholic minister of the family Lorenzo Fontana, to Catholic ethical positions againstabortion, l’euthanasia, l’gender ideology. In short, to those non-negotiable principles relaunched several times by the Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.
