Syria: the crime of the embargo
Embargo: there are also victims without bullets
More and more negative repercussions are affecting the living conditions of Syrian civilians, while some Western states continue to impose economic sanctions against Syria.
The economic war, whether it prevents trade or uses mass media or punishes those who help Syria, has many short and long term goals; essentially seeks to create economic problems that cause division in Syrian society and affect the investment environment after recently seeing improvement, as this economic war seeks to drive away investors and businessmen, says a report published by the Syrian news agency SANA.
The most important objective of the sanctions against Syria is to block local production in order to transform Syria into a state with consumption dependent on other countries, instead of being a self-sufficient productive state.
The effects of economic sanctions and the embargo on living conditions are nothing new for Syrians; according to economic analyst Shadi Ahmad, since Western states banned the import of oil from Syria, the annual income of the state budget was affected, thus reducing the government's ability to meet local market needs compared to what was done before 2011.
Ahmad mentions other measures that have put pressure on the economic situation, including preventing some oil tankers from entering Syrian waters even though this is illegal, but this still happened and caused severe power cuts due to fuel shortages.
He also mentioned EU sanctions on Syrian businessmen to limit their activities that help supply supplies and goods to the Syrian market, as well as decisions to limit money transfers by Syrians abroad which has had detrimental effects.
The most recent of the hostile acts targeting the Syrian economy is the bill approved by the US Congress, which bears the name hypocrite “Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act” despite the fact that it effectively blocks essential and necessary supplies for the Syrian people.
Ahmad reports that this act seeks to punish non-Syrian companies, be they from Russia, China, India, ecc. if they provide Syrians with any of the essential materials needed for the economic sector.
The Caesar Act targets any potential contributor to the financing or implementation of reconstruction projects, energy sectors, civil aviation companies and the Syrian Central Bank.
