“Today is a historic day for New York, increasingly world champion on the front of inclusiveness and equality”, comments the speaker of the City Council, Corey Johnson, a Democrat like the mayor Bill de Blasio who will now sign the law which will come into force on January 1st 2019.
“New Yorkers will no longer need documentation from a doctor to change their gender on their birth certificate and will no longer be treated as if their identity is a medical matter”, adds Johnson.
Of “exceptional decision” speaks Carrie Davis, the transgender lawyer who led the battle for 'Gender X', underlining with a clear reference to the policies of the Trump administration how the turning point is coming “in times of danger and uncertainty regarding the rights of transgender Americans nationwide”.
Some states like California, Oregon and Montana already allow you to change the gender on your birth certificate without medical authorization, but they do not include the 'X' sign’ instead of 'Male’ of 'Femmina'.
