The Interior Minister will not go to the Liberation celebrations: “I go to the police in Corleone”. Wrath of the ANPI
Il 25 April Matteo Salvini there won't be. His absence will cause discussion, there's no point in deluding yourself.
More than missing 20 days until Liberation Day and political controversies are already heating up. No one had ever exposed themselves so much before: on the sacred day for the partisans the Minister of the Interior will not be there “parade here or there” to celebrate the Resistance. He will go to Corleone instead, Between “the police forces” who fight the mafia every day.
The tear is raw. Perhaps unexpected. Salvini apparently will not go to the Altare della Patria, perhaps he will not accompany the Head of State to the opening of the celebrations and who knows if he will not even participate in one of the many initiatives organized (from’Anpi and not only that) throughout the peninsula. “The fight against the Camorra, 'ndrangheta and mafia is our reason for living – said the Northern League minister on the sidelines of the police celebration – I'm going to Corleone to support the police in the heart of Sicily”. In the face of the partisans.
It won't just be his absence that will weigh. What hits the mark are also and above all the words. Salvini doesn't understand “parade here and there” con “red handkerchiefs, green handkerchiefs, neri, yellow and white”. In short: he doesn't want to associate his image with that of those who color the processions partisans in Italian towns. An important break with the past. Legitimate, for goodness sake. But it's still a break.
The reaction of the left is obvious and obvious. The first to take a stand is Emanuele Fiano, already a signatory of a bill against the spread of fascist gadgets and the Duce. “We hope that the Minister of the Interior will be on the front line to fight organized crime every day, as unfortunately it seems not to be done – attack – Ma he 25 April is Liberation Day. That is, of the rebirth of democracy in our country and every true lover of our Republic should honor it without any buts or ifs”. For Fiano le “silly phrases” Salvini's “disconcerting”, because he remembers “of its role in the fight against the mafias in an instrumental way only to obscure the value of a historic day and increasingly fuel the denial of the value of’anti-fascism as the foundation of the Republic”.
The news angered (and not a little) also l’National Association of Italian Partisans. President Carla Nespolo is convinced that Salvini doesn't want it “honor anti-fascism and the partisan struggle with due respect”. “It is institutionally necessary – he said last night – that Salvini abandons his brutal propaganda against a national holiday that remembers so many women and men who sacrificed themselves to give Italy back the freedom stolen by the violence and crimes of fascism and Nazism”.
The disputes over the Salvini axis-partisans they are no longer new. In February the fuse exploded again due to the revisionist posts of the Anpi of Rovigo or the controversial conference in Parma on the foibe. Not to mention Nespolo's own accusations, than just last August the minister pointed out Of “massacre human rights”. Not that the League leader limited himself to cashing in. Three years ago, it was the 2016, Salvini – then only leader of the League – he decided to organize a demonstration against the Renzi government on Liberation Day. Nespolo resented it, talking about “provocation” e “insensitivity”. “The Anpi is not the master of 25 April because the Resistance had many faces and the 25 April belongs to everyone”, Salvini replied. “We will also bring the voice of the partisans who did not have the dream of the red flag”.
Three years later he hasn't changed his mind: he won't be there to parade. Not even from minister. And this – it must be said – denotes consistency.
