“My goal is to rediscover what lies at the heart of secularism, that is, the possibility of believing as well as not believing, for the purpose of safeguarding the national cohesion and the possibility of having freedom of religious conscience” – said Macron – “I will never ask any French citizen to believe 'moderately' in his God. It wouldn't make much sense. But I'll ask everyone, constantly, to have absolute respect for all the laws of the Republic".
As reported by the French weekly, the reform project is being examined by the Elysée but the transalpine president has already announced what the salient points will be. Among these there is no shortage of the establishment of a “Grand Imam of France” – on the model of the Chief Rabbi – capable of representing the moral authority of Islam before the State.
Hakim El Karoui suggested this solution to Macron, considered one of the most influential analysts of French Islam.
