Fighting Islamic fundamentalism throughintegration. This is the objective of the French head of state Emmanuel Macron That, as he explains in an interview with Sunday Newspaper, is considering one complete reorganization of Islam.
“My goal is to rediscover what lies at the heart of secularism, that is, the possibility of believing as well as not believing, for the purpose of safeguarding the national cohesion and the possibility of having freedom of religious conscience” – said Macron – “I will never ask any French citizen to believe 'moderately' in his God. It wouldn't make much sense. But I'll ask everyone, constantly, to have absolute respect for all the laws of the Republic".
As reported by the French weekly, the reform project is being examined by the Elysée but the transalpine president has already announced what the salient points will be. Among these there is no shortage of the establishment of a “Grand Imam of France” – on the model of the Chief Rabbi – capable of representing the moral authority of Islam before the State.
Hakim El Karoui suggested this solution to Macron, considered one of the most influential analysts of French Islam. According to him, Indeed, “the time has come to entrust the organization to the new generation of French Muslims”. For this reason it recommends that the Foundation for Islam in France, created in the past by the socialist prime minister Manuel Valls, is supported by a new association in charge of training of imams and theirs salaries, and of financing of places of worship.
The financing and training of imams would be the most delicate points to be resolved with the reform, as it is through these two routes that much of the foreign influence is exercised on French Islam. And Saudi Arabia is not lacking among the most generous financiers, land of Wahhabism, that is, one of the most backward branches of Islam.
The proposals are still not very detailed but the debate in France has already heated up. As reported by theAgi, a positive reaction comes from the French-Algerian Ghaleb Bencheikh, former president of the Grand Mosque of Paris, who found Macron's announcement "legitimate" and "interesting".
However, the reaction of the former vice-president of the National Front was controversial, Florian Philippot, according to which Macron intends “protect Muslims”.
After all, the tenant of the Elysée, addressing the Muslim religious authorities on 4 last January, he had already made his promise: “I will help you”.
