They go to war with each other, they traffic in drugs, prostitution, but they do not attack the territory. Let's hope it doesn't happen.". Only a few months have passed since the then national Anti-Mafia prosecutor, Franco Roberti, warned the Schengen parliamentary committee at the hearing, of the dangerousness of crime coming from Nigeria. And that fear was realized in Macerata. The alarm about the Nigerian phenomenon lies in its violent nature, in the mafia method combined with sacrificial rites, and in the ability of these criminal associations to feed on the masses of migrants from Africa. And in the fact that the Nigerian associations appear "even more structured than the Italian mafias".
A danger confirmed by the latest half-yearly report of the anti-mafia investigative directorate: «Nigerian criminal groups continue to stand out for the particularly aggressive methods with which they carry out drug trafficking and human trafficking, aimed at prostitution". In Italy, highlights the Dia, «The Nigerian association called Black Ax operates, a mafia-structured coterie well rooted in other contexts as well, whose associative bond comes, among other things, enhanced by a strong mystical-religious component". The rooting of Nigerian crime in Italy has emerged during various investigations, which highlighted the "mafia nature" of the coterie that would have settlements in Turin, Novara, Alexandria, Verona, Bologna, Roma, Naples and Palermo. But the former national prosecutor's warning is linked above all to migratory flows and the lack of judicial cooperation agreements with that country: “A huge number of Nigerians are coming here – he had explained at the hearing -. And we have a big problem with Nigeria. Think that the National Anti-Mafia Prosecutor's Office, at the time of the late colleague Piero Vigna, who was the Prosecutor at the time, he made a memorandum of understanding that we were never actually able to activate. They signed it, but we never activated it, precisely because of the resistance of Nigerians". But among the critical issues in the fight against the "black" mafia, Roberti highlighted the «problem of finding reliable interpreters, because they know that these presences in Italy are very dangerous for their Nigerian compatriots, for those belonging to the same ethnic group, and they even do a little’ of resistance to providing the interpreting service".
