We publish an excerpt from the book "Christians halved" (Rusconi Publisher, 1972) by the writer Orsola Nemi (Firenze, 11 June 1903 – La Spezia, 8 February 1985).
The text describes the secularist mentality that has pervaded our era and which affects every environment, even the Catholic one. Because of this mentality, even those who proclaim themselves Catholic in the professional field, politico, associative, ecc. no longer searches, as it should, the spread of the kingdom of Christ in society. The risk, reported by the Author, is to reduce Catholicism to an idea dissociated from reality: a failure in life and above all in eternity.
Christians halved
(…) "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's and give to God what is God's". Jesus talks about the tribute money to Rome. He had already said: «You will love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself".
Evidently, if this precept was obeyed, which is the most important and necessary, little remained to give to Caesar: the payment of taxes and compliance with civic and road regulations.
What happened instead was that the part to be paid to Caesar increased enormously and the part to be offered to God was reduced, for Christians, at best, to attend mass once a week. Many baptized people have also dropped this habit.
Generally, Caesar is given not only what is due to him, you give him everything. In our days Caesar is not only the State; almost every business demands, demands, in the existence of man, an exorbitant part that is given to her with good will. To politics, the profession, the profession, especially money, they have the title and dignity of Caesar and as such demand heavy tributes.
For convenience, it has been accepted as the norm, even by so-called believers, that religion is one thing and life another; therefore man thinks halfway, and lives halfway. The result is a strange sight.
If religion, that is, the faith from which it comes and which it manifests, it is detached from life, in which field it takes place? If it does not govern the conscience of man, what governs?
The man, paid his tribute to Caesar, remains completely emptied, he has nothing left to give to God; his ears are accustomed to other words, weigh the days on rigged scales, thus one finds one's hand with low mintage coins, tossed, and spends it badly, lives badly, his math never adds up, he cannot understand why he is in a state of discomfort; yet there is Progress, Hygiene, at Dietetics, Science has made great strides…
