But what happened to the moderates, you ask Antonio Polito in the Corriere della Sera? Already, where they went, but if that's why what happened to the liberals, the conservatives, Catholics in politics? Within a short time they disappeared, even though many thought they were the deep majority of the country. Today at a superficial glance, Italy is divided into two main blocks: one wide and low, i radical pop, and one narrow and long, i radical chic.
The former are defined as populists or sovereignists, the latter are the ideological residue of the left, the advanced tip of what remains of the progressives. The liberals they cultivate the private, they worry about the economy as befits them, or they invoke the EU, they connect to Europe. The Catholics they seem extinct from a political point of view, they have no common outlet, as it was at the time of the DC and as it basically was afterwards with the split into popular Catholics, leaning towards the centre-right, and Catholic Dems who leaned towards the centre-left.
Now they are loose, scattered, scattered and above all the Catholic motivation no longer appears primary in their choices; other topics, other scenarios, other choices come to the fore, even the Christian vision becomes a private matter, intimate or internal, if he doesn't want to resolve himself in reception, pauperism and social redemption. But also the conservatives who were a clandestine party in our country, strong and invisible, because they have always been ashamed of calling themselves conservatives, but today they are not seen around. So why be surprised if the moderates have disappeared when it is the entire family from which they come that disappears?
To tell the truth, our country has always had a strange relationship with the moderate category. Longanesi he said that Italians are extremists out of prudence, but the opposite could also be said, who are moderated out of hypocrisy, because deep down there is an immoderate streak in them, anarchist, if not subversive. It's not a coincidence, of the rest, that Italy had the largest Western communist party, the most flourishing fauna of extremists and maximalists, fascism had wide popular support. The anti-capitalist and anti-bourgeois spirit has always taken root here. Even when they all professed to be liberals, a few decades ago, then you went to see and they voted for parties all with a non-liberal if not illiberal tradition: they voted communist, socialist, social democratic, neo-fascist, also popular Catholic, while the liberals to the core were a small minority.
Moderates, moreover, it's a way of saying that says little or nothing. Because moderate is a tone, a pace, a style, even a wind, but it is not content. And a few years ago a personality that was anything but moderate, Berlusconi, he was their leader and opposed one who moderated, to the limits of narcosis, it really was, Study Program, even if he had everything in his lineup. The very definition of Forza Italia evoked something energetic, of muscular, of sportsman, not moderate. But who are the moderates today? Tajani or on the opposite side Gentiloni, Tasso high school friends? Too little. Even Berlusconi, according to what Tempo wrote yesterday, he thinks of re-founding Forza Italia by renaming it Revolution Italy. Naturally his "ideological" reference is not Gramsci or Lenin but Bruno Vespa, with his recent book of that title. And in reality the real concern would be to slow down the yellow-green revolution and, if anything, activate a counter-revolution. But beyond the contingent gimmicks, which I don't know if they will last until next week, one thing is clear: even if Berlusconi talks about revolution it means that there is no air for the moderates. It doesn't pay to call yourself moderate, they don't even get the votes of the moderates... Here, but, We are reminded of a bad historical vice of Italians: if there is a winning phenomenon, the tendency of his enemies is not to openly oppose an alternative project, but to assimilate with the winners, speak their language, use their slogans, and then try the reverse operation. Boxing rule: when you get hit by your opponent, don't walk away but hug him.
However, the question remains unanswered: what happened to the moderates, where they went?
