Children can be killed before birth through abortion. Often cruelly, dismembered piece by piece. With abortion pills (RU 486) babies die from lack of nourishment in the mother's womb. Babies in the embryonic state can be assembled and disassembled, freeze defrost, and vivisect…but lobsters, no: they cannot be boiled. And if they are traded, must travel in salt water – under penalty of fine, also salty.
Wesley J. tells it. Smith, sul suo blog Human Exeptionalism. It happens in Switzerland, which followed New Zealand and some other countries in outlawing lobsters in plain sight. The reason? The poor lobsters can feel pain, when they are thrown alive into boiling water (even if good crustaceans don't have a brain that allows them to process stimuli).
Switzerland some time ago changed its constitution to recognize the individual dignity of plants. Not ecosystems. Individual dignity of plants. A bioethics committee, responsible for explaining the reasons for this, stated that since plants share biochemical traits with us humans at the cellular level, it is immoral “behead” a wildflower.
A canton of Switzerland has appointed a lawyer to represent animals in court. One of these lawyers sued a fisherman on behalf of his client who became dinner, because the man had taken too long to catch the fish.
The Swiss country has also declared it illegal to flush a live goldfish down the toilet.
This great sensitivity to the pain of living beings is admirable.
The point is, however, that this great concern does not exist when it comes to protecting the lives of human beings: of children that doctors call fetuses – which can be aborted; of children that biologists call embryos – which can be manipulated and sorted and discarded etc; of people, malate, disabled or elderly or tired as they can “commit suicide” (as long as they pay, without too many questions): the Swiss Supreme Court has declared assisted suicide for the mentally ill (they are emblematic, eh, per “self-determination” the mentally ill…) it is a constitutional right.
Of course lobsters, when you throw them in the pot, they're really sad.
