Salvini, also in this electoral cycle, he was able to count on one “Catholic basis”. The analysis on the reasons for these consensuses
It wasn't a mere coincidence. During the last electoral round, Matteo Salvini he was able to count, once again, on the consensus of many Catholics.
There are those who voted League to defend Western identity, some for the restrictive line in bioethics, especially compared to the grillini's opening attempts, and some for the rosary and invocations.
Right, not all those who profess to be believers have chosen to support the sovereignist cause. We know how the ecclesiastical hierarchies think Vatican and we cannot fail to underline that since the end of the Christian Democrats there has been no more unity in the Catholic vote. But something happened. They are The Press we read about a”opa on the basis of believers” and of a multiplication of votes in which it emerges “the identikit of the Catholic-sovereign voter forged in March in the fiery Congress of Families in Verona”. It makes for a great starting point. Investigating is not that complex: just listen to the voices of those who are part of this group or those of those who are able to analyze the phenomenon.
We don't know if the people we interviewed voted for Lega – we didn't ask him – , but they all seem to agree on one thing: the Northern League leader convinced because his platform adheres to a certain system of values. Let's start with the university professor Eugenio Capozzi, already author of numerous essential books for historical-political analysis: “They see Salvini as an answer to their concerns (referring to Catholics, ndr)”. But what are these? “worries”? “Loss of identity, uncontrolled immigration, Islamization and family disintegration”. It is a symbolic and revealing quartet. Then the professor elaborates, arguing how these same Catholics have the feeling that those issues are not taken seriously by the Catholic Church.
The reflection of a consecrated person certainly turns out to be curious, Don Alfredo Morselli, that a IlGiornale.itdeclares that these consents also derive from the fact that: “Authoritative representatives of the CEI” they expressed positions “in favor of anti-Christian parties”, those “who fight in favor of abortion”. The don proceeds with a list of instances: “Civil unions, euthanasia, gender ideology, triptorelin for adolescents, easy divorce, immigrations without rules and naivety in the face of the Islamic invasion”, dice. Almost as if many Catholics, preferring the Salvini option, had wanted to send a precise message to the Italian episcopal leaders. A warning that would sound like a request: put an end to the leveling of the battles promoted by the Democratic Party or Emma Bonino.
Filippo Savarese, of CitizenGo Italia and among the organizers of the Verona initiative, he does it a little’ more complex: “In recent years, a new lay activism inspired by Christian humanism has been born – he pressed – , but not linked to the CEI”. A movement “which gave rise to two important Family Days and thousands of conferences throughout Italy”. Then follows a clarification: “The message was very clear: for Catholics the themes of life, of the family and educational freedom can never take second place, and remain clearly prevalent on other issues, although important, as an economy, immigration and social justice”. It should be added at least that Savarese doesn't just take the League into consideration, but also Brothers of Italy. Also interesting is the opinion of Chiara Chiessi, of University Students for Life, which highlights, among the various issues raised, the signing by some members of the League of the manifesto of the Pro Vita e Famiglia organisation. To put it in the most effective way possible he thinks about it Maria Rachele Ruiu, who is another well-known pro-life activist: “Italy punished those who mocked values and rewarded those who defended mums and dads”.
In short, the controversy over the use of the rosary or the “closed ports”, from the parts of the Catholic base, They don't seem to have caught on very much. There would be the distinction between “traditionalist Catholics” e “adult Catholics”, which might be useful for someone to explain “Why” poorly digested, but it does not seem usable for the analysis of electoral flows. It could be concluded that Matteo Salvini obtains consensus among Catholics also because, differently from the high ecclesiastical spheres, not only does it not blame Western man for his lack of commitment in the field of welcoming people migrants, that same lack of commitment which is rather complicated to demonstrate, but above all why, as Professor Eugenio Capozzi explained again: “Catholics have always voted based on what they felt were economic or political priorities” e, back, “they have never slavishly and uncritically followed the prescriptions of the Holy See”.
The warnings issued from the pulpits, In summary, they can do little, especially with respect to what Catholics perceive as the pitched battles of our times: protection and defense of’ identity, of life and family.
