Among the victims of the landslide of the Italian political framework , caused by Sunday's vote, there is also the so-called moderate centre. And it's no small detail. It's not just the neocentrist idea that has come down, with one eye on the left, of Casini and Lorenzin, and above all the old logic of centrism, intended as a place of mediation and political compromise. This is confirmed by the insignificant percentages of the last nostalgics of the Crusader shield.
Even the “legendary” Chamber of Pergine-Valsugana collapsed, what belonged to Alcide De Gasperi and entire Christian Democratic generations and then to Margherita, of the Ulivo and of the Catholic-inspired Democratic Party. To win, in that segment of Trentino, he was the centre-right candidate, a Northern League member, a sign of the political gap caused here too by the latest elections. A political gap that evidently does not call into question the strong Christian identity of the area, but gives it new meanings, in fact it makes it more direct, most popular, closer to the concrete interests of citizens. And therefore it distances it from the compromising mentality typical of the old democratism, available to easy ethical problems (those on the value of life, of the family, of traditional identity), forcing it to "radicalize" on the level of principles.
With Sunday's vote, people have finally chosen, eliminating political centrism in numbers and facts and with it the idea of a moderation that has nothing to do with the Christian virtue of prudence and which has represented - for years – the expression of the worst Machiavellianism, complicit in the dismantling of the values that are the basis of our national identity.
We must also start from a new question of "radicality" to understand the meaning of Sunday's vote. Voters said that more than a few calls for moderation and "good governance" are needed to answer the big, epochal questions that are knocking on our doors and already inside our cities., enormous problems caused by Islamic religious and cultural fundamentalism, by the power of technology and finance, from cosmopolitanism and the demand for identity of contemporary man.
Faced with these scenarios, in the face of the exceptional nature of current and ongoing challenges, which raise a great political question, that is, the ability to prefigure, to decide, to manage change and therefore to make clear value choices, the old centrist moderation has shown all its historical inadequacy, even at the ruling class level. For this he was defeated.
To win, Today, he is the decision maker. Consensus is gathered by those who give clear indications of values and programmes. Those who use the language of intransigence impose themselves.
Unusual evangelical ancestry comes to mind: “Let it be your speaking: "Yes, Yes", “no, no”; anything more comes from the Evil One". It is - ultimately - the meaning of "de profundis" for centrist moderatism, sanctioned by the ballot box.
