You have recovered from the overdose of videos and comments, of analysis, tables and statements? Let's try to change perspective, after a little preliminary notation. The winners are conspicuous, Salvini and Meloni, but who are the losers, over 5 stars? I would say above all three extrapolitical competitors: the magistrates during the election campaign, the media united against Salvini and the takeaway Bergoglismo. The symbolic victories of the League in Lampedusa, Riace and Capalbio sanction it.
But let's leave the triumphant alone, the growing ones, the fallen, and declinations. Let's leave the elect and the screwed alone, names and parties, analyzes of ebbs and flows. Let's try to go up one floor, placing ourselves on the level of basic orientations and asking ourselves not who won but what won.
How the political and cultural framework has changed? A great one has emerged, substantial gap: emerge, as we expected, a bipolarity of content between the heirs of the left and the heirs of the right. On the one hand, a front has grown that surpasses the 40 percent of the votes and who defines himself as a sovereignist: represents safety issues, the stop to migratory flows, the protection of the family, the fiscal revolution and public works, border defense, of political sovereignty, popular and national. On the other side, the left returns to the field with positions exactly opposite to the sovereignists on the subject of Europe and migrants, of bioethics and safety, of economy and sovereignty. It is a clear minority force, which oscillates between 22 and the 28 percent, if the entire left side is considered, including Bonino, despite having strong settlements in some cities and a vast ramification in the vital centers of society and among the elites: in school and culture, in the judiciary and in the press.
From an electoral point of view, the electoral comeback was not particularly significant Pd. Being in opposition to a government divided on everything and massively attacked, shake the monsters of the past, Nazism and racism, have the European media and powers on your side, see the 5star movement decompose, and see "the right" grow to a level that has never existed, I don't think it's a great result for the left. The polarization around Salvini should have made it grow much more. But beyond electoral accounting, the Democratic Party represents an area, a world, an antagonistic position compared to the sovereignist front. What is the ideological enemy of sovereignism? On the negative level it is anti-fascism, on a "positive" level it is the ideology of hospitality. The left in Italy today is attested to the secular version of Bergoglism.
They find no space and role, Instead, the forces that lie outside this polarization, from the centrifugal 5Star Movement to the wavering centrist Forza Italia. Il 5 Star Movement it functioned as a collector of dissent and a collector of popular ailments and resentments but it does not function as a governing force and as a catalyst of opinions and programs; it does not fit in with its orientation on the decisive themes of our present. The grillini are inconsistent in terms of content and therefore are allied with a force that they consider to be right-wing but to differentiate themselves they conform to the trend of the left. The old-new and system-antisystem scheme works as long as you are not in government.
From your side, Berlusconi he fought like a lion but confirmed his decline; after all, one cannot aim for an anastatic reprint of oneself, in plasticized version, and pretend to still be at the center of the universe, winking now at the populist side, now at the opposite side. Until yesterday he positioned himself as the guarantor of the sovereignists, today as a barrier against the same and opens up to large coalitions with the European left. And then he wonders why Salvini and Meloni (and many voters) they don't trust him...
I sovereignists they grew up in half of Europe, I am first party in France, in England, in Hungary, in Poland and Italy. Ma, as we expected, they may be more influential but the European power structures will essentially not change, only alliances will be extended. Therefore there will be no earthquake at European level.
And in Italy? Here too, political earthquakes are not expected but aftershocks, according to what was announced by the protagonists themselves, starting with Salvini. The center of gravity of the government will pass from the Grillini to the Northern League members and we will see if this is concretely practicable and if it can last. There's no sign of it for now, a turning point like the one hoped for by Meloni. It will only happen if the 5 stars choose the path of opposition, jubilant Di Maio.
In short, the European test is striking but does not overturn the existing structures either in Europe or in Italy. What then prevents us from believing that the great success of the League is temporary, as has already happened in the past to other winners of the European elections? A consideration: the sovereignist wave touches on issues that are not transitory but structural, designed to last over time. And our sovereignism is connected to a global picture that goes from Trump to Orban, passing through Marine Le Pen and many other successful national-populist leaders in the world, from India to Brazil. Therefore the moods of the electorate will also be variable and the triumphs of the leaders will also be fleeting, as Renzi's parables show, Di Maio, ecc.; but those themes, those orientations, those delineated alignments indicate marked trends, meant to last. Bipolarism was reborn in civil society before in politics, and woe to those who pretend not to see it. We will see whether the leaders and forces in the field will be capable of representing it or not.
