Once upon a time you said gypsies and you immediately reached for your wallet or purse, knowing you were taking a risk in their presence. Each of us has seen or experienced not one but ten incidents of theft and attempted theft by them. On the bus, on the street, in crowded places. Or even at home. You said gypsies and in the best case scenario you would get images of women asking you for alms in an insistent and threatening way, they forcefully shove flowers into your hands to demand money, or they cursed you. You said gypsies and images of beard-haired men with knives in their hands came to mind and you wished you would never meet them in solitary spaces.. You said gypsies and you remembered their degraded centers, worse than reception centers for immigrants, dirty and shady places that you need to stay away from. As soon as a gypsy settlement was established, thefts in houses and in the streets increased dramatically.
Conditions of poverty, right, but then you couldn't explain some luxuries and some high-powered cars. Then one beautiful day, the miracle happened. A ban was issued. Not the prohibition on stealing, to camp illegally, to exploit children for furtive activities. No, the ban on calling them gypsies. They were called Roma and the music suddenly changed. We talked about Roma culture, of nomadic lifestyle, some philosophers saw them as the precursors of modern nomadic life and nomadic thinking, without ties of place or law, without rules or boundaries. He remembered the Roma who ended up in the concentration camps. We talked about marginalized cultures, of protection of minorities. Gypsy became a forbidden word, even the song by Nicola di Bari and Iva Zanicchi about the gypsy went underground. And who doesn't think so, he wants the racial laws to return, it's racist. True degradation, says the New Inquisition, it's not the Roma camps but the idea of closing them rather than improving them with our public money.
Here is the miracle. It was enough to call them Roma and everything we knew about them, due to rumor and prejudice but above all due to life experience it was canceled by law. And if you take them out, here's romophobia, racial hatred... A name to purify and thus leave the atrocities of the past to the old and forbidden word gypsies. The trouble is that the legend of the Roma is a thing but the reality of the gypsies has not changed, always remains the same. Thefts, threats, knives, child abuse, social insecurity. For goodness sake, never generalize, but it must be admitted that the average, that's the standard. I don't know any progressive or humanitarian that in the presence of a gypsy on a bus he does not move away and does not watch over his wallet or his belongings. Here are the practical damages of rhetoric, moreover, in accordance with the law, with an additional recommendation: let's build for the Roma those residential towns that we are unable to rebuild for the earthquake victims or give them the public housing that we are unable to give to the poor Italians. Forcing, moreover, their nomadic nature, forcing them to become sedentary.
Now let's leave aside the legend of the Roma and the reality of the gypsies with their respective prejudices, e let's think seriously. First of all, we need a real census of those who have no fixed abode and no working activity: It's not enough to know how many there are but what they do, what they live on, what legitimate activity they do to afford those cars or simply to live. If they don't do any business how you think they support themselves? And Italian law shouldn't, the authority, the police intervene accordingly, in these cases also providing for expulsions?
Turning the prescription positively: Roma-Gypsies respect our laws, send their children to school, are available, despite their nomadic status, demonstrate their livelihood activity, pay taxes, albeit minimal if in a state of poverty, and no one will have any objection to them, indeed they will be able to benefit from social services. Let them live their nomadic life too, but not in large abusive and degraded villages, exposed to organized crime, to feuds between tribes, including fires. But in individual licensed caravans, never grouped in greater numbers than 3-4 unit. This is what reason says, given the common experience. No a priori judgement, only distrust in hindsight, for what usually happens in the presence of nomads and their camps. But reality counts for nothing for political correctness and if it diverges from ideology, so much the worse for reality. Then they wonder why people are protesting, vote for Salvini or populist or don't feel protected. Because in the end the crime belongs to those who call them gypsies and not to those who steal.
