PROTECTING THE UNBORN DOES NOT PROMOTE DIALOGUE

It seems like a joke but it's not: il 15 last February the prelates of the Lutheran and Evangelical Church, to which almost 80 percent of the population belongs (circa 3 million and 750 thousand faithful), they released one declaration bizarre: «The Church has long been committed against abortion: an ethical challenge, human and political. When the abortion law was discussed and adopted in the 1970s, the Church clearly opposed the changes introduced. Priests bluntly criticized the law for the purpose of protecting unborn life. Today we realize that the Church's argument did not allow for good dialogue. It's time to create a new climate".

«WE APOLOGIZE TO THE WOMEN»

Therefore the Church signed a document in which it recognizes that it has lacked "commitment to women's liberation and rights. We are sorry. As a Church we must change the way we talk about abortion and care for those affected.". And what does it mean to change the way we talk about abortion? Affirm that “a society with legal access to abortion is a better society than one without such access” because it “prevents illegal abortion and promotes the health and safety of women”. The goal of the Church, the bishops write, it's not so much questioning the legislation (abortion in Norway, in the norm, it is legal until 12 weeks), not even questioning the fact that the fetus is a life "that has value and requires protection", how much to "promote an inclusive communion".
The result is a mess mixed with mea culpas for not having helped single mothers in the past («children born out of wedlock could be denied baptism»), praise of the technology that today allows us to "intervene and correct fetal development", premises on human dignity which "is given by God and does not depend on functional abilities", satisfaction with the "reduction in the number of abortions among adolescents" probably attributable to multiple factors, imperative exhortations to "provide better services" to families with disabled children.

«ABORTION MAKES SOCIETY BETTER»

Without the frills, The Church of Norway briefly apologizes for the clear position taken in the past against abortion; he doesn't say he supports it but in fact he supports the most pro-choice argument of all, that is, making birth control accessible is good for society because it would reduce the total number of abortions; it implies from the first lines that opposing the liberalization of pregnancy terminations has worsened the dialogue and slowed down the race for women's rights. She apologizes for having been in favor of life and because the defense of life did not coincide in ways and deeds with worldly objectives.

THE SPOTLIGHT OF ETHICAL ISSUES

In fact, the negotiations that led to the new coalition led by Erna Solberg ended a few weeks ago, in which the small but decisive Christian Popular Party (KrF) achieved its goal of putting a stop to twin abortions (or embryoreductions), which as he explains the Western they will no longer be practicable on the basis of the woman's mere request, but only after the mandatory opinion of a specific medical commission. Not only that, the KrF obtained the right of veto in the field of genetics and biotechnology to be included in the government contract (from egg donation, to medically assisted procreation, to mitochondrial donation).

Furthermore, in recent months Prime Minister Solberg himself had said he was ready to modify the law on abortion by repealing the so-called "down paragraph" (paragraph 2, letter c) used to admit late abortions following prenatal diagnoses that reveal the presence of fetal pathologies or characteristics attributable to Trisomy 21. There were thousands of women took to the streets to protest with the cry of "The body is my right" and "Defend abortion". Last 11 October, Furthermore, deliberating on the case of Katarzyna Jachimowicz, fired from the hospital where she worked because she was against the administration of abortive drugs or devices, The Norwegian Supreme Court has recognized the right of doctors not to carry out medical treatments that may go against their conscience.
