THE LAW OF PRAYER WITHOUT THE LAW OF BELIEVING – Comment on the suppression of the Ecclesia Dei Commission

As announced, the Commission Church of God was suppressed, and its competences now pass to a newly formed section of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. The Motu Proprio promulgated yesterday, 19 January, confirmed what had already been considered by many as a fait accompli.

The lawyer Fabio Adernò, in one of his comments published on Mass in Latin [Who] believes that «the only thing that changes, from today, it's the letterhead". A pious illusion, if I may, which will soon be contradicted by the facts. As Steve Skojek rightly observed in a tweet, what Bergoglio does, although apparently harmless, should always arouse some suspicion. And the suspicion that a government act of a purely administrative nature could herald a further reduction in the freedoms granted to conservatives in the liturgical sphere is anything but unreasonable, indeed it seems confirmed by the now invalidated practice within the new church. Let the normalists therefore resign themselves, to remain in communion with the conciliar sect, they are willing to negotiate on doctrine by accepting Vatican II, in order to keep the Tridentine liturgy alive.
The Vatican herald, recently assumed the editorial direction of the Holy See, in an editorial that appeared yesterday [Who], after the news was disclosed about Vatican News [Who], does not fail to reiterate the popular official: «the exceptionality ends». The pious reader will believe he will find some reassurance in the words of Tornielli and the Court commentators: «the institutes and religious communities that usually celebrate in the extraordinary form have today found their own stability in number and life». On the other hand, those who know clerical speech know well that in these words lies the main danger of the papal document: the stability to which Bergoglio refers does not consist so much in the preservation of the prerogatives and the right to freely celebrate the traditional liturgy of the Church, as well as the fact that no others can be added to these Institutes; whoever wishes to make use of the Motu Proprio the Supreme Pontiff he will soon realize that the only possible way forward is to join an approved community – Fraternity of Saint Peter, Institute of Christ the King, Institute of the Good Shepherd – without the possibility of building a new one: Why, precisely, «the institutes and religious communities that usually celebrate in the extraordinary form have today found their own stability in number and life». By number: no others are needed. And it is clear that the right recognized by the Supreme Pontiff to any secular or regular cleric to celebrate according to the Rubrics of 1962 at this point it will find a necessary and unavoidable downsizing, if not a real suppression, as I already predicted in my previous comment [Who].
Who tried to attribute responsibility for this decision to the Society of Saint Pius – as we know happened by some conservative clerics – today finds itself in the awkward position of still being able to benefit from Santa Marta's tolerance in liturgical matters, as long as they are not questioned – not even indirectly – the doctrinal and ecclesiological demands of Vatican II. Indeed, «the aims and issues dealt with by the Commission “are predominantly of a doctrinal nature”», and "the doctrinal remains the only but also the most important issue left open". The doctrinal theme, precisely, remains open but solo with the Society of Saint Pius, since the Institutes of the suppressed Commission Church of God they accept without gloss the Council, limiting themselves to asking to be able to celebrate the pre-conciliar rites.
As, whether to play with plicate planets, arundini and tenebrari are admitted within well-defined spaces, it is also not permitted to profess that Faith which, for the very essence of the liturgy, it is a coherent and necessary expression of the law of prayer. Basically, Bergoglio made that clear a contradiction in terms That, in legitimizing the so-called extraordinary shape, he tore it from its doctrinal roots, which is manifestly opposed to the ecclesiology and doctrine of the conciliar sect. Massimo Faggioli also confirms this in brief form, one of the progressive intellectuals emerging after the advent of Bergoglio: «With his decision regarding the Church of God, Pope Francis tells traditionalists: you can have the pre-conciliar liturgy, but you cannot have the pre doctrine(and anti)-Vatican II" [Who].
The Society of Saint Pius, in maintaining the traditional cult form, it also coherently embraces its theological presupposition, in fact excluded and ignored – On the contrary, definitely denied – from the communities hitherto belonging to theChurch of God.
This is not – let's be clear – the acid comment of a fanatical traditionalist, a priori adverse to new course modernist: the analysis of this situation is confirmed in a long time by one of the most fervent apostles of the new church and very zealous courtier of Santa Marta, Andrea Grillo, professor of Sacramental Theology and Philosophy of Religion at the Pontifical University of Sant'Anselmo in Rome. Which, in an article published just yesterday on Presents [Who], confirms the merciless analysis of the writer, while approving it with the wild enthusiasm typical of the sectarian who finally sees his aversion to the ancient religion supplanted by the Council confirmed in high places: «Born to remedy the fracture with the Lefebvrian world, [the Commission] had become, progressively, a sector of the Roman Curia in which a "parallel identity" of traditionalist Catholicism was built and under the pretext of an imaginary "agreement with Lefebvrians", it was claimed that the bar of Catholic identity was continually moved towards them, above all with a progressive emptying of the understanding and effectiveness of the Second Vatican Council". Grillo's intolerance is noticeable here not only towards traditionalism all in short, but also towards that very moderate conservatism that, under the pontificate of Benedict XVI, had found its own legal place in the conciliar pantheon. According to the professor, after the Motu Proprio the Supreme Pontiff and the promulgation of the Instruction of the universal Church, «It was easy to imagine that this measure would open the way to an unstoppable process of ever-wider concessions, made not by the Church of Rome, but by the traditionalists of the Roman Curia, who had obtained a dangerous and too broad autonomy". Note the bold distinction «not from the Church of Rome, but by the traditionalists of the Roman Curia", which is a prelude to a further cancellation of those "ever-wider concessions" granted in the name of a "dangerous and too broad autonomy".
An autonomy, seems to understand, that under the Jesuit Ladaria he will not find any space ad intra, but at the most ad extra, towards the Society of Saint Pius; admitted and not granted that the Institute of Msgr. Lefebvre believes any discussion with those who are not willing to give up anything on the doctrinal front is fruitful. From what can be understood from the statements of the Superior of the Fraternity, Don Davide Pagliarani, the sole purpose of the Roman meetings is to leave a documentary trace that, in the universal silence of the Prelates, there were those who courageously affirmed the immutable Catholic truths before the conciliar Hierarchy which progressively denied them.
Andrea Grillo, taken from abducted modernist, betrays in its article those that, if it does not represent a real program agreed with the leaders of the conciliar sect, expresses at least some decompositions desired the possible realization of which can already be glimpsed. He defines the a group of believers foreseen for the request for the celebration in the ancient liturgy as a «traditionalist madness installed in the Roman Curia». And he adds: «No, according to the motu proprio which comes into force today, all the skills of Church of God are moved to a Section of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. It would be logical that, first of all, Education of the universal Church, being destined for a Commission that no longer exists, came to be abrogated. To bring a little common sense and honesty back to a world where fiction has caught up, for too long, guard levels". Basically, Grillo hopes for the repeal of the Motu Proprio application document the Supreme Pontiff, nullifying its effectiveness. «This step inaugurates a new phase in the relationship with the Lefebvrians, but above all in the application of the Motu Proprio the Supreme Pontiff, which lies at the root of this great staging, arrived today, finally, at the final curtain. But perhaps it is only the curtain of the first act of the comedy".
You read that right: a big one staging, actually one Staging, I dare say, with a capital letter. So long as, albeit from antithetical and irreconcilable positions, Grillo sees me as perfectly in agreement with his analysis. The farce perpetrated with the Motu Proprio, Indeed, it was revealed by a simple administrative act in which the Roman Pontiff exercises his power. An administrative act that, as the lawyer Adernò says, «returns – with all due respect to the protesters of the the Supreme Pontiff – in the orbit of the phase – questionable or not – of normalization started under the Pontificate of Benedict XVI". Normalization, precisely. But a normalization that takes a further step towards apostasy, since it sanctions the breakup with the help of the law of the intrinsic link between the law of belief e the law of prayer, not only within the Latin Church itself – something that had already happened with the co-presence of the ordinary and extraordinary form – but also within the conservative wing, which happens to have the traditional liturgy, but without being recognized as having the right to believe in what it celebrates, to profess that Faith of which the Tridentine rite is a necessary expression. In this sense, the celebration of the ancient rite by those who accept Vatican II is inexorably confirmed as a «great staging, arrived today, finally, at the final curtain".
E, as Grillo predicts, this "perhaps is only the curtain of the first act of the comedy" according to the director's intentions, but destined to end – we fear – in tragedy for the faithful.
