The Grand Orient of Italy (Goi) goes to the elections on Sunday 3 March without bookmakers being able to accept bets. In the terms of the defunct Totocalcio it is a fixed one.
The outgoing Grand Master, Stefano Bisi. The Sienese journalist leads the only list present. It hasn't happened since 1985 when the Goi assembly had re-elected Armando Corona from Cagliari by plebiscite. The main Italian Masonic obedience at the time was still shaken by the P2 scandal, the covered loggia by Licio Gelli and Umberto Ortolani. Today between the investigations of the parliamentary anti-mafia commission and the grillina fatwa against freemasonry, the beyond 23 thousand subscribers (but only i 17 thousand with the rank of master) all 858 Goi lodges believe that the level of alarm is similar.
«It is not obligatory to argue in life», Bisi comments slyly, «and I certainly didn't stand in front of the Villa del Vascello headquarters with a gun to prevent the presentation of competing lists. It was a spontaneous movement. Evidently the brothers will have considered that the outgoing council did well and that there is cohesion and serenity within obedience".
Bisi is therefore moving towards another five years of mandate with the intimate hope that they will be calmer than the last two years characterized by a trial for receiving stolen goods for the events of the Mps-Mens Sana basketball and by the seizure of the lists ordered by the anti-mafia president, Rosi Bindi, just two years ago, il 2 March 2017.
Bisi's criminal trial ended with an acquittal. The Anti-Mafia investigation, aimed at ascertaining the links between Freemasonry and organized crime in Calabria and Sicily, is under the attention of the new commission, led by grillino Nicola Morra, who announced that he wanted to insist on the Bindi path.
To "massophobia", as a pamphlet by the outgoing and soon-to-return Grand Master is titled with contempt for etymology, it consolidated the Goi internally and pushed the dissidents into a corner, especially those who would have preferred a less antagonistic relationship towards a republican institution. However, there is reason to doubt about internal cohesion and serenity.
Some members were suspended and then expelled, like the former Grand Treasurer of the Goi, Giovanni Esposito, for not having paid a few thousand euros in costs of his Masonic trial.
«Of course I could pay. I didn't want it", says Esposito. «I was accused of being morally responsible for the publication of one of my letters in the media, sent for information to a dozen high-ranking officials of the Goi, in which I asked Bisi to suspend himself for the Siena trial. He was acquitted today but only because the fact did not constitute malice. He took the money and this casts a moral doubt on his behavior. I don't live off Freemasonry and I'm proud to have been kicked out by these people. The brothers of the Grand Lodge of England have already proposed that I join".
