Berlin wants to send 40 thousand migrants back to Italy with charter flights. But Salvini is blocking: “Non autorizzo alcun atterraggio”. E ora si rischia la crisi diplomatica
Of Andrea Indini
La tensione è ai massimi livelli. The test of strength of Angela Merkel to send 40 thousand irregular immigrants back to Italy risks opening up an unprecedented diplomatic crisis.
Come anticipato nelle scorse ore da Republic, Berlin has already given the green light to repatriate the so-called “Dubliners” con voli charter per Roma. “How I closed the ports, adesso chiuderò anche gli aeroporti”, he blurts out Matteo Salvini promettendo che nessun nuovo immigrato, proveniente dalla Germania, metterà piede sul suolo italiano. The first flight would already be scheduled for next Tuesday and, if the German government does not back down, an irreparable rift could open between the two countries.
A few days before the elections in Bavaria, at Merkel, in crisis of consensus, he emerges with a forced effort that destabilizes the already precarious relations with Rome. All because the German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer he failed to make an agreement with Salvini sui “Dubliners”, that is, those immigrants who are fished out in European countries other than the one they first entered. “We do not accept any agreement that could bring even one more immigrant to Italy”, he had cut the Northern League leader short by slamming the door in the faces of the Germans. In Berlin someone must have taken it bitterly and here they came up with a plan to speed up the repatriations. Merkel's idea is to send 40 thousand to Italy and 15 thousand to France. The plan is so well advanced that the chancellor has already set two dates for the departure of the first charter flights full of foreigners: il 9 and the 19 October. A spokesperson for the Bavarian Office for Asylum and Migrants said, but, made it known that “this week there will be no charter with migrants to be rejected towards Italy”. In any case of this crazy plan the Interior Ministry he was never even remotely informed.
After the failure of the negotiations between Seehofer and Salvini, always second Republic, the dossier would have ended up in the hands of the prime minister Giuseppe Conte who in recent days has started talking about it directly with Merkel. The chancellor's disagreement reveals the impossibility of finding an agreement between the two governments. In fact, the Germans want to send him back to Italy, “within 48 hours after entering Germany”, anyone who crosses the border illegally. Nothing to do. Also because Berlin rejected Salvini's counter-proposal to take one immigrant to relocate for each “Dubliners” sent back to Italy. The hard fist of the Germans, but, it won't do any good. Also because at the Interior Ministry they are determined not to accept any abuse on the part of the Germany. Just as it has already closed Italian ports to NGO boats, which brought thousands of illegal immigrants to our shores, Salvini is willing to close all airports to German flights. “If anyone, in Berlin or Brussels, plans to unload dozens of immigrants in Italy with unauthorized charter flights – says the Northern League leader – know that there is not and will not be any airport available”.
