On a cold morning of the Immaculate Conception, the black soul of the Republic awakens. In the night between 7 and December 8th 1970 Prince Junio Valerio Borghese (former commander of the X Mas in the Republic of Salò, leader of the neo-fascist organization National Front, which stood out as summer gibilista, naval lieutenant and naval officer during the Second World War in command of the submarine Scirè, for the sinking of the English battleships Valiant and Queen Elizabeth in the port of Alexandria, Egypt on 18 December 1941) leads a coup attempt, defined in code Operation “Tora Tora”. The reference is to the anniversary ofJapanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
Me too, in those days of September 1943, I was called to make a choice. And I decided my choice. I've never regretted it. On the contrary, that choice marks the culminating point in my life, which I am most proud of. And in the moment of choice, I decided to play the hardest game, the hardest, the most ungrateful. The match that would not have opened any path to material values for me, land, but which would have given me a character of spirituality and moral cleanliness to which no other path could have led me. In every war, the underlying issue is not so much about winning or losing, to live or die; but how to win, of how you lose, of how to live, of how you die. A war can be lost but with dignity and loyalty. Surrender and betrayal brand a people before the world for centuries.
A “secret” document, found years later in the home of piduist journalist Carmine “Mino” Pecorelli after his murder (20 March 1979), explains how the subversive project involves the occupation of several by the conspirators "sensitive" places in the capital. From the Ministries of the Interior, Foreign Affairs and Defense at the General Command of the Carabinieri, from the Rome Police Headquarters to the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate of the Republic, then passing through the Rai-TV offices in via Teulada and via del Babuino, for the radio-connections center of the Ministry of the Interior based in Monterotondo, for the Radio Repeater Center of the Ministry of the Interior based in Anzio and for the Nazzano Power Plant. The operation would have started in Rome from the Orlandini construction sites in the Montesacro district, from the gym of the Paratroopers Association in via Eleniana, from the university district where the groups of conspirators had gathered, affiliated with neo-fascist movements and members of the Army, as well as the members of the Forestry Guard. Once the positions have been conquered and consolidated, the “black prince” he would have launched this proclamation from the occupied RAI headquarters:
“Italians, the desired political turning point, the long-awaited coup d'état has taken place. The political formula that governed us for twenty-five years, brought Italy to the brink of economic and moral collapse, has ceased to exist. In the next few hours with subsequent bulletins, you will be shown the most immediate and suitable measures to address the current imbalances in the nation. The Armed Forces, the police forces, the most competent and representative men of the Nation are with us; While, on the other hand, we can assure you that the most dangerous opponents, those, to be clear, who wanted to enslave their homeland to the foreigner, they were rendered harmless. Italians, the State that we will create together, it will be an Italy without adjectives or political colors. It will have only one flag: our glorious Tricolor! Land Soldiers, of Sea and Air, Law enforcement, we entrust to you the defense of the homeland and the re-establishment of internal order. No special laws will be enacted or special courts will be established; We only ask you to enforce the laws in force. From this moment, no one will be able to mock you with impunity, offendervi, hurt you in spirit and body, kill you. As we hand the glorious Tricolor back into your hands, we invite you to shout our exuberant hymn of love.: Italy! Italy! Long live Italy"
The project also ultimately envisaged the physical elimination of the police chief Angelo Vicari and the kidnapping of President Giuseppe Saragat. It was about, In short, Of unleash chaos, hitting the state in its key places, thus provoking the intervention of the military units. The only ones who, according to plan, they could have brought back calm and tranquility. The only ones capable of protecting order. The 'ndrangheta was also behind the project, who procured the weapons. The involvement of Cosa Nostra was confirmed in the 1980s by justice collaborators Tommaso Buscetta and Antonino Calderone, who recalled the story during the so-called Andreotti trial. Even the CIA, the US spy agency, had been informed. Furthermore, it was there too the involvement of the Greek colonels' regime, who had made training camps available for many right-wing extremists.
In September 1968, while the entire peninsula was crossed by the protest, Borghese had founded the National Front in an attempt to gather those more radical right-wing movements around himself, including Avanguardia Nazionale by Stefano Delle Chiaie, who did not recognize themselves in the institutionalized and parliamentary politics of the parties. Declaring open and violent hostility for the Italian left, insisting on the danger of a "red drift". At the decisive moment though, an inexplicable counter-order would have suddenly interrupted the definitive implementation of the plan. Borghese ordered some immediate cancellation, understanding that it would be repressed by government forces via a contingency plan called the “Demand Triangle”, designed as an excuse to allow the Christian Democratic government to enact special laws. A trap.
In every war, the underlying issue is not so much about winning or losing, to live or die; but how to win, of how you lose, of how to live, of how you die. A war can be lost, but with dignity and loyalty. Surrender and betrayal brand a people before the world for centuries (Arrigo Petacco and others, History of fascism, 1981)
In those years the so-called "strategy of tension" was in full swing, whose theorization can be traced back to the famous conference on the revolutionary war organized at the Roman hotel Parco dei Principi, dal 3 al 5 maggio 1965, by people very close to the military leaders. Some right-wing subversive forces are intent on weave the “black plots”, which point to the collapse of democracy, with the support of conservative and reactionary circles and sectors of the secret services. The conspiracy, planned down to the smallest detail for the assault on the country's nerve centers, only the. will be discovered by the Italians 17 March 1971, when the daily newspaper “Paese Sera” reveals its existence with an article entitled “Subversive plan against the republic, far-right plan discovered”.
Il 18 March the deputy prosecutor of Rome Claudio Vitalone issues the arrest orders, for the attempted armed insurrection against the State, towards the exponents of the extra-parliamentary right Mario Rosa and Sandro Saccucci, the businessman Giovanni De Rosa, the building contractor Remo Orlandini, and the following day Borghese is also joined by a mandate. After the failure of the coup plan of 1970, the scion of the Roman house he found asylum in Franco's Spain, where it remained despite the revocation, In the 1973, of the arrest order by the Italian judiciary. The Public Prosecutor's Office of Rome, forced to close the investigation 1971 due to lack of evidence, the investigation reopens on 15 September 1974, when Defense Minister Giulio Andreotti delivers a burning report from the military secret service (SID) which sheds new light on the subversive plan.
The Court of Assizes of Rome reconstructed the story in a very reductive way, thanks above all to the role played by prosecutor Claudio Vitalone. It was ruled out that the plan had a national character. The coup was defined as an act «inscribed in a lucid plan» but «unrealistic», despite exponents of the National Avant-garde having penetrated, with the consent of the Carabinieri, right into the Ministry of the Interior, taking possession of good 200 mitra. The various subversive projects were avoided and the role played by the secret services and the relations with the Armed Forces were left in complete darkness.. The few sentences imposed (for political conspiracy and criminal association) they were very mild. The Court of Assizes of Appeal in November 1984 However, he definitively acquitted everyone of all charges. Il 24 March 1986 the Supreme Court definitively confirmed the general acquittal. For justice, the Borghese coup had never happened.
