With this sentence Gmork, the character "servant of the Power behind Nothingness", he explained to the young knight Atreyu why the fantastic world of Fantàsia, fruit of hopes, of inventions and even of human dreams, had to be destroyed.
The novel The never-ending story, released in 1979, tells the story of little Bastiano, one little boy left orphan of the mother and in complicated relationships with the father, who through reading a mystical book rediscovers the path to life. A life that is not an end in itself, but capable of saving a parallel universe at the same time, Fantasy to be precise, progressively eroded by a mysterious entity (il Nothing) which is leading it to inevitable extinction.
Fantàsia is the allegory of human creativity: a true thermometer of men's ability to dream, of their tendency to set themselves spiritual objectives - even before material ones - which may appear impossible but which can constitute the leitmotif of their very existence. In a real world where no one dreams anymore, imagine or simply idealize, the fantastic representation of being and any further projection are destined to perish.
The great intuition lies precisely in the Gmork quote. Being at the service of Nothingness has in fact the primary mission of preventing anyone who tries to reconstitute Fantàsia through the only possible instrument: l’imagination. Imagining is the key to freedom and in a certain sense also to faith. His denial is an expression of apathy, sloth e, in final summary, submission
