Beyond what may be the political and substantive judgments on the nascent so-called government yellow-green branded League e Five Star Movement It's truly impressive that when this is about to be launched it will come back into fashion Spread ghost, that is, the increase in the differentials between interest rates on Italian and German ten-year government bonds. This increase in spread in fact it would lead to an increase in the outlay that the Italian State must pay to place its securities on the market. A very delicate situation given the enormous public debt of the State which would tie the nascent government hand and foot, inhibiting its political action.
The first thing you notice is that this government would be in stark contrast to those we have had in recent years. In fact it would be the first government openly Eurosceptic and the result of the vote of a new social bloc: that of the discontented, of the people who have emerged defeated from globalization and the constant transfer of sovereignty to Brussels, impoverished and frustrated. It would also be the first government that sees the hitherto dominant and always strongly pro-European elite, move into opposition together with its reference parties.
A truly unprecedented situation which also saw a very violent barrage from newspapers and television stations in unison. Not by chance, we can see that these newspapers and televisions are entirely controlled by the very elite that risks being undermined.
The combined action of increasing spreads and mass media is reminiscent, without a doubt, another fairly recent historical phase. I'm referring to 2011 when the last one Berlusconi government was undermined and replaced with the Monti government. Regardless of what you think of the first and second, no one can deny that while the Berlusconi government had its popular legitimacy that of Monti he had none and was pushed to Palazzo Chigi on the basis of the incredible increase in interest rates and thanks to the relentless mass media campaign. Someone accidentally forgot the mythical “Hurry!” full page of the usually very prudent Sole24Ore?
An action of the so-called markets and that of the mass media which seems combined even today to create a climate of mistrust in the next government just as it created mistrust in the Berlusconi government of the time. To fuel suspicion, there is also that small detail according to which the ruling elites are out of the control room.
How can this situation be considered? A coup? A pre-emptive coup attempt? An undue interference with what is legitimate (you may like it or not, but it is legitimate) political line of a probable new government? I couldn't answer this question. We certainly dance on that fine line between what is legitimate and what is not. A truly ambiguous situation.
What is most worrying is that something much more important than a government and a single measure is at stake here (regardless of whether it is right or wrong). E’ the quality of our democracy is at stake. That is, the legitimate right that the People express themselves as a majority in a different way than the dominant elite would like. If the People cannot express themselves freely, or if his decision was sanitized and reduced to what the elites want, thanks to the unscrupulous use of mass media and financial speculation, what would remain of our democracy if not an empty simulacrum? What would remain if not a sterile vote, completely irrelevant, to be exercised once in a while to save the facade?
I don't know if what is happening can be considered an attack on our democracy with the aim of reorienting the intentions of a legitimate majority or just a legitimate form of pressure. But two important texts come to mind. The first is the Coup d'état technique which cost that genius so much trouble Curzio Malaparte who wrote it. The second is Coup d'état: a practical guide of one of the greatest gray eminences of American foreign policy: Edward Luttwak.
In the first text, old now 1931, Curzio Malaparte he argued that to prevent an elite in power from being undermined wherever possible “treat the pathology with another pathology”. Beyond metaphor, he meant that sometimes to maintain power it is necessary to create a new evil and offer the necessary solution. Exactly what is happening with the rise in rates: it is clear that our pro-European elites have a ready solution for this emergency; another pro-European government that acts in accordance with Brussels' diktats. It will be a coincidence, but in politics there are hardly any coincidences.
Edward Luttwak in his manual he explains it to us as a classic coup d'état – with colonels and tanks in the streets – it is impossible today in a democratic state because it would encounter hostility from the population who do not like to give up democracy. Therefore we need to use more sophisticated methods and above all create the conditions to do so with a moral justification, so as to be able to act by subverting the democratic order.
Ecco, Today, much more could be at stake than a government that one may like or not like and that makes right or wrong measures. Today and even more so in the near future, the quality of our democracy could be at stake.
