"Il Parlamento indaghi sulle stragi del boia Tito"

The exiles' proposal to the Chamber: «We start from Vergarolla, first massacre in republican history"
A parliamentary commission of inquiry to shed light on the crimes committed by Tito's executioners. Starting with the Vergarolla massacre, which caused the Italians to flee from Pola del 1947.
The request of the Federation of Exiles was sent in recent days to the secretary of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Chamber, Vito Comencini, on the eve of 10 February, day of remembrance of the exodus and the foibe. But all parties will be involved.
The objective is «the establishment of a parliamentary commission for the Vergarolla massacre and the crimes committed on the eastern border». The text sent to Comencini recalls that the «Republic was born with a profound vulnerability (wound, ndr) () in the provinces of Trieste, Gorizia, by, Rijeka and Zadar. () The Tito occupation marked mournful pages for the Italian community". The proposal underlines how «the Yugoslav national liberation war had taken on annexationist characteristics and the opponents of the project had to be eliminated». And we remember the "forty days of occupation" after the war was over, in May-June 1945, of cities like Trieste in addition to the deportations of 600 Italians from Gorizia. The foibe massacres began in Istria in 1943, after the emptiness of September 8th and continue after the war is over. «It wasn't just about fascists or collaborators, but also of anti-fascists, democrats and patriots who, after fighting in the Liberation, they opposed the aims of the communist regime in Belgrade" we read in the text.

«The proposal came from the Federation of Exiles to characterize this year's Day of Remembrance. We hope that all political forces will join" vice-president Davide Rossi explains to il Giornale, which represents the bulk of the associations of the 250 thousand Istrians, Fiumeans and Dalmatians forced to abandon their homes by Tito's violence.
«Il 18 August 1946 Pola, city still formally Italian, an attack caused carnage with a number of deaths that, depending on the different sources, oscillates between 70 and the 110 unit to which to add a hundred injured among the swimmers who attended a sporting event in the Vergarolla area – we read in the proposal – It was the first massacre in the history of republican Italy, with an impressive number of victims comparable to the much more well-known massacres of the Years of Lead".
On the occasion of a swimming competition that attracted the Italian population to the beach, abandoned anti-ship mines blew up. The identified victims were 64, but other remains were scattered in a thousand pieces on the beach. Pola was formally still Italian and in English hands. At first the accident theory was accepted. In reality they would have been Ozna agents, Tito's secret police, to organize the attack. The climate of fear that followed the massacre led to the exodus, the following year, of the 90% of Italians from the city.
A Bruxelles il 5 febbraio Elisabetta Gardini, group leader of Forza Italia in the European Parliament, organizes an exhibition and a conference dedicated to the tragedy of the exodus and the foibe. Rossi, invited to speak on behalf of the exiles, underlines that «there will also be representatives of the republics of the former Yugoslavia. An excellent opportunity to ask for collaboration and access to the archives".
Comencini also reiterates that «a Commission can shed light by asking collaboration from neighboring countries, who have the documents. For once the European Union can be an instrument of help". And he adds: «History is often written by the winners. Finally we have begun to address it from another point of view". It is no coincidence that the final part of the proposal specifies that «a parliamentary commission of inquiry dedicated to reconstructing these still obscure pages of the post-war period would partially heal the wound and contribute to clarifying events that are still the subject of controversy today, justifications, misleading and instrumental interpretations".
