St. John writes to the verse 42: “Nevertheless many also of the leaders of the Jews believed in Him, but for fear of the Pharisees they did not confess it publicly so as not to be kicked out of the Synagogue".
Father Sales' Commentary.
Father Marco Sales comments: “Jesus also had disciples among the leaders and princes of the people of Israel, but they were full of fear and did not dare to show themselves publicly as such. This is how Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea were, for example." (cit., p. 90, note n. 42).
The Evangelist also gives the reason: “For they loved the glory of men more than the glory of God” (v. 43).
