You don't need to dig between the lines to understand how, in Macron-thought, the only good idea of democracy is the French one. Or rather that of a France under his leadership. O, better yet, that of a Europe with him as the new Napoleon. Let us not deceive ourselves. It's not the umpteenth "macronade". It is not a boast similar to a tirade, already denied by the White House, with which he took credit for convincing Trump to stay in Syria. This time we are faced with a project. The refoundation of Europe and the reduction of national sovereignty, the two concepts that Macron has been arguing about since September, have as their starting point the creation of transnational lists for the European elections. The model is that of «En Marche!», the formation with which Macron made a clean sweep of socialists and the old Gaullist right at home.
In the French president's project it will be enough to present a «Europe en Marche!» in the European elections to reduce the Eurosceptics and scrap the two coalitions that dominate the European Parliament. Right, they won't let him do it. Not in the elections of 2019 at least. But Macron's flattery should not be underestimated. Some appear deceptively desirable. The reform of the Dublin Treaty, the creation of a central European authority to evaluate asylum requests and the imposition of new rules for the distribution of migrants could benefit Italy. And even the creation of a European budget and a single Finance Minister could attenuate Berlin's financial "dictats". We have to downsize the economic part of Macron's "euro-reforms"., but, Merkel has already thought about it. Now that politics remains. And here the risk of a Franco-German duopoly capable of dictating the law not only to an Italy with compromise governments, but for all of Europe it is more real than ever. «Let's not forget – the President of the Commission Jean-Claude Juncker recalled yesterday – that Europe is not just Franco-German, we need the contribution of other states". To understand what that warning hides, you don't have to go far. Those in the Renzi and Gentiloni governments deluded themselves of finding support in Paris were amply rewarded by a Macron who was very ready to renege on the agreements on the Saint Nazaire construction sites, in attempting to downsize our role in Libya, in blowing up our mission in Niger and sending the gendarmes to our territory to remove the migrants from his home. If this is a good morning, we have to ask ourselves what the future holds for us of a Europe bent on the democracy of a single thought. O, Better, to the self-proclaimed authority of Macron's thought.
