Pollsters agree that a tougher line towards’immigration, in this election campaign, be decisive for the 25-30% of voters.
For the 20% dell’ centre-left electorate (around two million left-leaning Italians) they view with alarm the sharing of welfare tools such as public health and public housing with immigrant families. “L’ Immigration is the second most important issue among Italians after that of work, which however clearly distances it. This is a transversal topic that especially affects the medium-lower segments of the population”, explains to Messenger Enzo Risso, director of’ Trieste polling institute SWG. If the job is considered the first emergency since 54% of Italians, a curb on immigration is welcome 28% of voters. Not only that. The issue of taxes is considered the most important (58%) ma “Think about the Italians first” it is the second in order of importance (48%) and helps determine the voting choice of 30% of Italians. “A harder line such as that represented by the slogan Stop immigrants garners less support than 5% about compared to the softer Italians think first”, adds Risso. According to Antonio Noto, director of Ipr, “the contrast all’ Italians like immigration very much and it is a stronger driving force in the North than in the South and very robust in the outskirts of large urban centers. It will certainly be one of the issues that will determine the outcome of the elections 4 March”.
Similar numbers are also exposed by Carlo Buttaroni, director of Tecné:”According to our findings, a third of Italians are not feeling the recovery and it is the same segment of the population that is seeing its levels of social protection reduced at the same time. E’ evident that these segments of voters, concentrated in the suburbs of large cities, do not look favorably on the migratory flow towards there’ Italy and they don't even notice its decrease because the presence of migrants who arrived in recent years has not yet been eliminated”.
