The president of Rai Marcello Foa takes a swipe at the do-good rhetoric: there is no xenophobia in the actions of European populist leaders towards migrants and Roma. People's attitude of suspicion towards migrants "is based on direct social experience", he said in an interview with the Israeli newspaper Haaretz. Instead, he added, the persecution of Jews and other minorities during World War II "was based on a racist ideology". The truth, Foa specified, is that in many Western countries "people believe they are no longer masters of their own home and I think it is a legitimate feeling". There are – he added – «many international organizations that have enormous powers and no one knows anything about them, this is why what we call sovereignism is a self-defense mechanism". According to the president of Rai, writes Haaretz, sovereignism means greater border controls to stop the flow of migrants and fewer restrictions on economic and budgetary policies, but also that sovereignty must be returned to the people and taken away from international institutions, including the EU. Sovranismo, Foa argues, it does not mean nationalism. «Nationalists – he explains – believe that their country is superior and has some moral primacy, economic and cultural on other countries. I reject nationalism, it's dangerous, it belongs to another era and has only caused damage", Foa continued, according to which sovereignism wants to return to nation-states that can have trade and dialogue relations between themselves without interference from international mechanisms.
