There is a lot of talk in the newspapers and in the summer debates about the ongoing attempt to rebuild, if not the Democratic Party, at least a credible and electorally competitive left.
The first consideration is that there is an abysmal disproportion between the much space dedicated to the topic in the media and the low turnout of the public at the various Unity parties on whose stages old war remnants alternate, Veltroni type, and aspiring new bosses, from Martina to Zingaretti. This is the sign that the future of the left no longer interests anyone, not even to historical militants, probably nauseated by the continuous and inconclusive war between the various internal gangs. What will become of the Democratic Party is a question that only nostalgic commentators now ask, intellectuals in disarray and frustrated politicians.
A seemingly de-injured country is a dream come true, and if this were the case it would be a sort of "mission accomplished" by those who have fought for decades, in politics and the workplace, to achieve this goal. If it were true, but it isn't. We are making the mistake of making the end of a party coincide with the end of an ideology, Salvini's temporary success with the definitive redemption of everything that is not left-wing. Let's be careful. This government is already left-wing in its DNA because the Five Star Movement is a neo-far left movement, as all the analyzes of electoral flows have shown. But what is much more important is the world of school, of the judiciary, of finance, of culture and the nerve centers of the State are firmly in the hands of a historically profoundly left-wing ruling class.
Who doesn't even think about stepping aside just because, for the first time since the post-war period, it was left orphaned of a solid, organized and fierce reference party. Nope, this system, survived and indeed grew despite being an electoral minority in the years of prevailing Berlusconism, he certainly won't be disarmed by Salvini's shouts or the arrogance of the fake Christian Democrat Di Maio. On the contrary, good communists are at their best precisely when they hear the sounds of battle and smell blood. Their aim today is certainly not to resurrect the now useless Democratic Party, if anything it is to sabotage the League (operation already underway) and infiltrate the Cinquestelle even further. So for a liberal there is little to celebrate and disarm, because the Democratic Party may be broken but the left is alive and well.
