It is an extract from the preface signed by the Minister of the Interior and Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, which baptizes the political essay by Paolo Becchi and Giuseppe Palma, From the Second to the Third Republic, appena uscito per Paesi edizioni (304 pp., 12 euro). A book that, first, recounts the birth of the Lega-M5s government and frames it as a definitive overcoming of the political past. Ma è davvero così? We didn't want to believe it. The collapse of the Morandi Bridge, that we Genoese, with a touch of colonized provincialism we called it the Brooklyn Bridge, It's a shocking tragedy, for its load of victims, pain, destruction and the terrible consequences that will drag on for years. Equipped with a tricolor flag, stationed in front of the stage, we followed the ceremony, we saw with the wonder of age the president of the republic Giuseppe Saragat surrounded by men in full uniform and the imposing figure of the great cardinal Siri, historic archbishop of the city.
We have crossed that very long bridge thousands of times, seventy meters above the valley of the Polcevera stream full of council houses and industrial warehouses of the former Superba, every day for decades we saw and touched it on our way to work. It's no longer there and it's someone's fault. They talk about lightning, of an intense storm and structural failure. Let's wait to make judgements, but on the morning of the eve of the August bank holiday it just rained. No floods, from the years 70 we remember at least six, devastating, in the city of Genoa. We don't know how many lightning strikes have struck engineer Morandi's artifact in half a century (few knew that the work was named after him), nor how much rain has wetted the imposing structures since then. Genova, 15 ago – What unites the Corviale snake in Rome, an attempt that started badly and ended worse to build a public housing "barracks" in Soviet style bridge over the Polcevera collapsed yesterday? A name, that of engineer Riccardo Morandi.
Born in Rome in 1902, he began his activity in the 1930s by experimenting - among the first in Italy - with the use of reinforced concrete and pre-stressed reinforced concrete. At the beginning of his career he designed churches and cinemas, and then specialized in the construction of bridges.

Italy is Mediterranean, hospital, genuine. E’ a non-model of integration inherent to our history that should not be intellectualized by the new clerics of anti-sovereignism.
A stunt by some kids in the Turin night club that targeted several women including Daisy Osuake, Italian athlete of African origin, it has turned into the tip of the iceberg of an alleged racial hatred that is devouring the country. For now the Carabinieri are excluding the xenophobic motive and yet the political recovery is already underway to hit the yellow-green government, considered an accomplice and instigator of this artificial reconstruction of the facts.
Racism that translates into concrete actions exists, but it is in the heads and deeds of the pischables, which are very few in Italy, and they certainly do not represent the deep soul of our people. Real racism doesn't belong to us. By history, culture, geography. We Italians are Mediterranean, simple people, hospitable, our way, towards all foreigners, that we have never loved nor despised, but respected on the basis of common decency, those unwritten rules of coexistence that characterized a land of passage, an extraordinary crossroads of peoples, clans and tribes. That news story on Isola Capo Rizzuto which saw Calabrian swimmers rescued 56 migrants on the beach, perfectly expresses the spirit described above. Now who knows how many they will tell Salvini: “Many enemies, so much honor!”. Deputy Prime Minister Salvini writes it, are Facebook, by posting a press article reporting news of the various attacks on the Minister of the Interior, in the past few days, from the Catholic sectors to those of the left. In reality Mussolini's motto was not "many enemies", but “many enemies”, however, that is the meaning.
And it is also not the first time that Salvini has used this phrase, and then it is a sentence of simple common sense: the leader of the League used it at least one other time, in February 2015, referring to the criticism of him by do-gooders who underlined that there were Italians in poverty while the State paid for hotels for illegal immigrants. The phrase, being sure to be effective, it has been used by many people, and is erroneously attributed to Julius Caesar, like many other mottos of the Duce. But it's not even his. This beautiful phrase was almost certainly invented by a man who had many enemies in his life: the German leader Georg von Frundsberg (1473-1528), obviously unknown in Italy. He was a general of the Holy Roman Empire of the German nation who fought for the House of Habsburg, and in particular for Emperor Maximilian I. Georg spent his whole life fighting almost continuously for the Habsburgs, especially in Italy. It seems that right in Vicenza, fighting against the Venetians in the Battle of La Motta, Venetians who were in overwhelming numbers, the leader told his servant that he had pointed out the disproportion: “many enemies of von Frundsberg, much honour!”. It was the 1513.
Today there is a statue in his honor at the Military Museum in Vienna, commissioned by Franz Joseph, and during the Second World War a Waffen SS division was allowed to bear the title Frundsberg. The German leader has been forgotten, but the phrase remained, just as the phrases invented by the Arditi during the Great War remained and were used, mottos taken up by Mussolini and relaunched for their validity and for the message they conveyed. Among these, “He who stops is lost”, “Better one day as a lion than a hundred years as a sheep”, etc. In short, the sentences, the mottos, the slogans one would say today, they rarely belong to the person who made them famous, but the merit of Mussolini and other leaders is certainly that of having valorized those concepts that touch the emotional chords of man and which are ultimately eternal values. Returning to Salvini, we are ready to bet that the storm over his use of certain expressions will continue. But we also bet that Salvini, to stay in the metaphor, "don't worry".
P.S: this was also a motto of the Arditi of the Great War...

Guareschi, del '68 se ne fece un baffo

Like today (yesterday for those reading, n.d.r.), fifty years ago, in the fateful '68, he went to the other world Giovannino Guareschi. He left the small world that few had described, to reach the big world, the one where that Lord lived who in his House gave advice to one of his fiery dependents on earth, Don Camillo. At least that's what Guareschi says.

He left early, Giovannino, a 60 years, after a troubled life, between concentration camp, prison under fascism and anti-fascism, plus a host of books translated all over the world, of very popular films that represented that fabulous post-war Italy, and adventures in the press, like his impertinent Candide who played a decisive role in the defeat of the social-communist popular front in the 1948 elections.
Giovannino died on 22 July '68 but he had time to write his last Don Camillo dedicated to today's young people. The book was released posthumously and marked the striking contrast between the old communist Peppone (that the anti-communist Guareschi had made sympathetic with his irrepressible humanity), the tough Don Camillo and a young, beardless protester, who was traveling on a motorbike with studded and fringed bags and a black jacket with a skull and the words "Veleno". Which becomes the boy's nickname for Guareschi and also the metaphor of the protest. "The Chinese" also arrive in the town of Brescello and upset the ideological geometries of the Italian-Stalinist Peppone and also displace the religious ones of the parish priest. Guareschi links the protest to the advent of the consumer societyi. For him the antagonism between the two phenomena is only occasional, related, not substantial.
