AFTER CHESTNUT'S ATTACK ON BRIANI
Even conservatism, a Verona, it is a land of conquest (politics). The recent attack of Matteo Castagna of Christus Rex to the Councilor for Culture Francesca Briani (“It's gay-friendly, resign") attests to it.
We are not interested in going into the merits of the controversy. The interesting fact is Castagna's timing and skill in "riding" the story, so as to put the arrow and overcome – in terms of media representation – who so far has established himself as the main champion of "traditional" values, i.e. The People of the Family of Filippo Grigolini. Which on Facebook he candidly admits: “We were beaten to the punch by the Christus Rex association, close to the mayor".
A disappointment. Il PdF, in the last year, had managed to occupy and monopolize the political space of "tradition" – see the cases of the Living Library at Tocatì, of the pro-gay “Marry who you want” stand at the Arsenale and even the controversy over Elton John in the Arena.
Now the invective of Chestnut, then received by the mayor, marks a new fact. And the (momentary) media overtaking could also have a political effect. Because if The People of the Family – despite his radical conservatism on ethical issues – It defines itself as “Christian inspired, but secular, non-denominational and open to non-believers and other religious confessions" and is culturally in the center-right fold with also hints of transversal civility (its national leader, Mario Adinolfi, he has a long history in the centre-left), Christus Rex is close to radical right-wing positions and is avowedly “a group of Integral Roman Apostolic Catholics (sedevacantists)” therefore pre-conciliar.
Conservative radicalism in Verona will become even more radicalized?
