Roma, 3 mag – “The number of people trying to get to Italy has evidently literally exploded in 2017 and most of them are not entitled to international protection. It is therefore not the case that NGOs carry out this substitute activity, but you who have the political responsibility should assume it". This was declared by prosecutor of the Republic of Catania, Carmelo Zuccaro, speaking at a hearing at the Senate Defense Committee. “Many lives at sea – added the prosecutor- they get lost. Volunteering must fill in where there are shortages in the states, but in a structural rather than emergency situation, this matter be managed by the States".
“Smugglers – Zuccaro pointed out – often receive instructions to throw the telephone into the sea if the rescue is carried out by military ships, while with civilian ships the satellite is taken by third parties and reused for other rescue operations. In fact, calls have been reported from the same mobile phone.". Between the the NGO personnel include figures "not exactly comparable to those of philanthropists" Zuccaro specified, specifying that it would be "very useful to identify the sources of financing for the most recently created NGOs". Because "the goal of solidarity is among the noblest of those pursued by man and the wider it is the more noble it is. But in this case there are interests at stake not only of those who are saved".
The Catania prosecutor then illustrated the role of the mafia in this scenario: “Italian mafia organizations are keen on the huge amount of money paid to welcome migrants, we are talking about notable figures, partly intercepted by the mafias". “There is theimpossibility of hosting all economic migrants in Italy: for NGOs this is not a discrimination, but for a State the difference is significant, because the control of migratory flows can only be the responsibility of the States" Zuccaro then specified. “We must avoid – said Zuccaro – the strengthening of criminal organizations that will make stabilization in Libya difficult. Traffickers manage to develop volumes of profits which make them increasingly stronger and more organized and will make it easier for them to counter the Libyan government that has been formed".
