FIFTH COLUMN
Of Marcello Veneziani
Let's tell the truth, we Italians have become unrecognizable. If we were to meet on the street those of us today with those we were just ten years ago, we wouldn't recognize each other and maybe we wouldn't even say hello. But how did we get to this point? To understand the present let's take a step back to the past. So ten years ago, these days, he had become prime minister for the fourth time Silvio Berlusconi. The Grand Duke of Padania Umberto Bossi was with him in government. Finish he had become President of the Chamber and dolphin, successor in the breast. Gianni Alemanno was elected mayor of Rome. At that time the National Alliance still existed. The loser of that time was called Walter Veltroni. The Movement had not yet been born 5 place, Di Maio was a stadium mask and Renzi didn't exist, a bit like now; he was a kind of boy scout, he was not yet mayor of Florence. Another world, prehistory.
But what happened to get to this point? There are a thousand factors, and we won't do the whole story. But we would like to focus on one detail. Italy was tired of the left, then and now, she had been disappointed by her umpteenth government and had once again voted for the centre-right and her King, Berlusconi. What happened, at that point? I should tell two stories, actually three.
The first story is that the elements against that government were unleashed. Global economic crises, from America to us; European economic wars, Arab springs bearing down on us, judicial wars against Berlusconi, domestic and international political conspiracies, press campaigns. In short, an evil three-year period which then ended with the well-known white coup that ousted the Berlusconi government. The left doesn't know how to govern and doesn't know how to be popular, but he knows how to destroy, it has a terrible power of interdiction and intimidation.
The second story it's that the centre-right was a formidable electoral war machine but then did little or nothing in government, and it had already been seen with the government-record legislature from 2001 al 2006. Nothing changed, he left the previous structures and potentates, he did not realize the things he had announced and for which he had been voted: fiscal and liberal revolution, national awakening and social reform, order, values and safety. A national flop, as at the local level. Rome in the lead, not to mention the Lazio Region. A bit of a disaster. The right passed from here, and left nothing. It did not cause the catastrophes denounced by the left but neither did it cause the promises announced. The center-right was only the curtain of the Silvio Show. One-man-show. It was a political alliance, it became a Personal Fact.
The third story it is the most delicate, because it affects the private. The leaders of the center-right lost their minds. One aspired to become Priapus King of Troy, and surrounded himself with a group of sluts, pimps and fixers, plus a few old courtiers. He had ruinous stories, concluded more disastrously. But that became the Permanent Theme of the country, our badge in the world. Italians bunga bunga... The irreplaceable work of the magistrates and the media contributed decisively to this reduction of Italy to a brothel.. Elsewhere the economic crisis was breaking out, here the issue was whether Noemi had been there, how much d'Addario had taken and whether he knew Ruby was a minor. We didn't talk about anything else, every other emergency took second place. The country paralyzed, he lost the faculty of understanding and will, it became a huge platform for gossip about the prime minister's direct erection.
But if the king lost his mind, even the Duke of Padania wasn't joking with his magic circle, his prodigious children, the hags and the League coffers used as family ATMs. We know how it ended about Fini, at the time Daniela was still there, even though he was pining for Stefania. Col finale horror, crazy and businesslike that we know well. Private stories that we wouldn't be talking about if they hadn't had that disastrous impact on politics.
In short, those three intertwined stories produced the unseemly end of that world. After the government, Berlusconi he gave the worst of himself to the point of making us miss his time in Zoccolandia. He got it all wrong, he had an affair with everyone, he supported and attacked all governments, he assumed all positions and their opposites in a political kamasutra that resembles a harakiri, he managed to destroy everything he had created, he chased, purged, he chose the worst. Finishhe didn't just break up with his wife, with the prime minister and the allies, but he also broke with the right and his electorate, and was reciprocated with a hatred that risks outliving him. Bossi he went from head of the League to head of accusation against the League, of which Salvini is still suffering the consequences. Alemanno ended up in nothing, he left no trace of himself at the Capitol, or so he hopes. The center-right ended badly, without regrets. Its leaders were brainwashed, or at least what they had in its place.
Now perhaps we are beginning to understand a little why a country that did not want to end up on the left and found itself this sort of centre-right, then he threw himself after Renzian's vain interlude of hope, on populism, sovereignism and buffaloism, in the sense of general anger. Grilled, cinchingialito, enraged, but what else could he do? In short, we have reached this point, and if we ourselves are unrecognizable and we have to show ourselves documents to understand who we are, perhaps the fault is not entirely solely with the Sovereign and Underly People. The story does not make leaps but proceeds by degrees and above all by degradations.
