ROME – What it means to be a Freemason today? The answer is Stefano Bisi, Grand Master of the Grande Oriente d'Italia, Italian journalist and writer, in an interview with Salerno News 24. [Blitzquotidiano app, free, Click here,- Ladyblitz click here –News Today, App on Google Play] Bisi explains that nowadays we live in an era of "great tensions and divisions", but being a Freemason means being part of an initiative that stands in defense of "free thought" and has the aim of “uniting men building meeting bridges”.
Interviewed by Claudia Izzo, which underlines how harmony and perfection are elements longed for in the obedience of the Grand Orient of Italy, Bisi explains the meaning of Freemasonry today:
“Being part of an extraordinary initiatory school that aims at the improvement of Man and which defends great universal values such as the Freedom, the Brotherhood, l’Equality, the Tolerance, the dialogue, il respect for man and rights. We live in a time of great tension and division on a global level and Freemasons today have a difficult but exhilarating task: that of being defenders of free thought and of uniting men by building meeting bridges and not impassable walls which lead to the disaster of humanity".
Speaking about the seizure of the lists of Calabrian and Sicilian freemasons by the Anti-Mafia Commission in 2017, Bisi explains that he believes the filings are a danger to democracy and what a national filing would imply:
“To the denial of rights and non-observance of the principles which are enshrined in our Constitution and which are intended to protect all citizens of the Italian Republic. We would be in the presence of a serious vulnerability to democracy and a dangerous drift towards authoritarian positions. I hope that free consciences and the many secular associations in our country understand the risk that certain actions can cause for everyone”.
Bisi then reiterated during the interview the importance of making one's voice heard in defense of one's ideas and respecting everyone:
"Exactly, we don't have to turn away and act like ostriches, thinking that only certain categories are affected. When a problem exists, everyone must ask themselves the dilemma and trigger the necessary reactions before certain mechanisms can lead to situations of risk for Democracy".
The journalist Bisi then explains to Salerno News 24 what is the importance of communication, both in the profane world and in the Masonic one:
“Communication has taken on a crucial role in all areas and the role of journalists and opinion makers has become more crucial and delicate than ever. You must have not only professionalism but also a great sense of responsibility in publishing or putting news and comments online. We are experiencing the sad phenomenon of fake news and easy trials on social media. We are in a time where it is easy to distract people and lead them into dangerous witch-hunt situations. Then there is a world of falsehoods and deviations regarding Freemasonry. On our website of the Grand Orient of Italy there is everything written for those who want to understand what Freemasonry actually is and what its beneficial actions in support of Humanity are.".
